College athletics departments
getting protective of their logos
University athletics departments are beginning to get more protective of their logos. In this story published last week, the Washington Post chronicled schools such as Georgia Southern and Florida State that have gone after high schools using their logos without permission.
Today, we look at Georgia high schools that are using helmets or logos of college teams. This is not an attempt to hunt down trademark violators, as some Georgia schools have agreements with college teams, and not all familiar logos have a trademark.
We just thought it would be interesting to see which college logos are the most commonly used in Georgia.
Special thanks to The Helmet Project and the Georgia High School Helmet Project.
lClemson's paw: No fewer than 19 Georgia schools use a cat's paw as the logo on their helmets. Clemson, the Tigers, first used a paw print on its helmet in 1970, according to the Helmet Project, and the shape has changed over the years. Today, Parkview's helmet (above) most resembles Clemson's. In fact, it's the only orange helmet like Clemson's with a paw print in Georgia. Parkview's nickname is the Panthers. The others with paw prints are Alcovy (Tigers), Bradwell Institute (Tigers), Camden County (Wildcats), Carver of Columbus (Tigers), Cedar Shoals (Jaguars), Claxton (Tigers), Darlington (Tigers), Douglas County (Tigers), Dunwoody (Wildcats), Forest Park (Panthers), Greene County (Tigers), Harris County (Tigers), Lakeside of Evans (Panthers), Metter (Tigers), Schley County (Wildcats), Valdosta (Wildcats), Wheeler (Wildcats) and Washington-Wilkes (Tigers).
lFlorida State's arrow: A dozen Georgia schools use FSU's arrow design, which the Seminoles adopted in 1976. Salem (Seminoles), Vidalia (Indians) and Westside of Macon (Seminoles, left) use almost exact replicas of FSU's helmet. Those that use the shape but not the colors are Baldwin (Braves), Creekside (Seminoles), Cross Keys (Indians), Dodge County (Indians), Jenkins (Warriors), Lumpkin County (Indians), McIntosh (Chiefs), Oconee County (Warriors) and White County (Warriors).
lGeorgia's G: It's really the Green Bay Packers' G. Vince Dooley borrowed the G shape from the Packers when he became Georgia's head coach in 1964. In the case of Griffin and Greenbrier (left), the helmet includes the Packers' hunter green and gold colors, so we know where those came from. Others using the G shape are Gainesville, Greenville, Groves and Ware County. No Georgia high school has a helmet that matches the University of Georgia's.
lLouisville's cardinal: Only one school - Osborne - uses Louisville's cardinal logo, but it's a match. That's significant because Louisville, Texas, Florida State, Clemson and Michigan are the only major college teams whose helmets are copied almost exactly by at least one Georgia high school.
lMiami's green and orange: It's the sign of a good brand when merely the colors - green and orange - are instantly recognizable. No Georgia school uses the Hurricanes' "U" helmet logo, but Albany, Rutland and Stockbridge (left) use the green and orange color pattern using a different letter.
lMichigan's wings: Michigan has used some version of the winged helmet since 1938. The design first was used by Princeton. Seven Georgia schools use the design on their helmets, and two of them - Sequoyah (Chiefs, left) and Prince Avenue Christian (Wolverines) - use color patterns close to Michigan's maize and blue. Sequoyah's colors are black and gold. Others that use the designare Hillgrove (Hawks), Miller Grove (Wolverines), Rockmart (Yellow Jackets), Union Grove (Wolverines) and Woodland of Cartersville (Wildcats).
lTexas' longhorn: There had never been a Georgia team named after cows until 2003, when Kell opened. Lambert (2009) and Lanier (2010) later lassoed the nickname Longhorns and some flavor of their logo. Only Kell's helmet (left) is an exact match to Texas', but the others use the logo in some way.
The NFL has no restrictions on high school teams using its logos. Here is a list of NFL teams and the schools that have borrowed their helmet designs in some fashion.
*Bears: Commerce, Callaway, Forsyth Central *Bengals: Troup *Chargers: Eagle's Landing Christian, Northview *Chiefs: Stephens County *Cowboys: Grovetown, LaGrange *Eagles: Brantley County, Collins Hill, Josey
*Falcons: East Laurens, Flowery Branch *Lions: M.L. King, Westlake *Packers: Gainesville, Greenville, Greenbrier, Griffin, Groves, Ware County *Patriots: Berkmar, Northside of Columbus, Westside of Augusta, Wilcox County
*Raiders: East Paulding, Treutlen
*Rams: Clarkston *Redskins: Chattooga, Social Circle |

TD Club to honor Harris, Barr, Millen
Etowah linebacker Christian Harris, Starr's Mill lineman Alex Barr and Grady coach Ronnie Millen are the winners of the Touchdown Club of Atlanta's weekly awards.
Harris, the back of the week, returned an interception for a touchdown and helped lead a goal-line stand from the 1-yard line in Etowah's 17-14 victory over Woodstock in a key Region 5-AAAAA game. Harris, who has more than 100 tackles this season, is committed to Tennessee.
Barr, the lineman of the week, helped Starr's Mill to 35-24 victory over Northgate. Starr's Mill is 8-0, and Barr, the team's top lineman, has committed to Vanderbilt.
Millen, the coach of the week, led Grady to a 7-6 victory over St. Pius in a Region 5-AAA game. Grady (7-1) is now the region front-runner.
The honorees will be recognized at noon Monday at the Touchdown Club's weekly meeting at Fox Sports Grill in Atlantic Station. The guest speaker will be West Georgia head coach Darryl Dickey. The program, sponsored by the Army, can be seen live at www.touchdownclubofatlanta.com at 12:25 p.m.
Send nominations for players for the week to GHSF Daily at ghsfdaily@bellsouth.net by noon on Monday.
Forest Park LB wins Falcons 'Captain' award
Achilles Jackson, a linebacker at Forest Park, has been named this week's winner of the Atlanta Falcons Captain in the Community award.
The program recognizes outstanding Georgia high school football student-athletes who demonstrate strong leadership skills on and off the field. Winners are selected by USA Football, the Official Youth Football Development Partner of the NFL. Each winner's high school will receive a $1,000 grant to support community initiatives courtesy of the Atlanta Falcons and the NFL's Youth Football Fund.
"What makes a good leader is someone who is hard working and also dedicated to his team but also putting his heart into his school work," Jackson said.

Westminster and Lovett play on Friday night in a Region 6-AA game. Their head coaches, Gerry Romberg and Mike Muschamp, were technical advisers for which movie that was filmed in Atlanta last year? (Answer next Wednesday)
Answer to last week's question: The second-longest tenured head coach in Class AAAAA is Parkview's Cecil Flowe, who has been the school's head coach since 1993. The longest-tenured coach in AAAAA is Dacula's Kevin Maloof, who announced last week that he will be retiring after this season, his 20th at the Gwinnett school. |
