Red-tail Conservancy Stands Up
to
Save Another Woods
GS aerial
Once again a majestic hardwood forest is being sold in east central Indiana.  However, there's a complicating factor in this one.  It happens to be the home of Camp Munsee, an historic camp that holds fond memories for generations of Girl Scouts and their families  and has played a significant role in accomplishing the noble Girl Scout  mission.....to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.
I'll be the first to admit that Red-tail is not in the business of running camps, nor do we have the capacity to do so.  Our success in accomplishing our mission has brought us to the point where we operate at or beyond the capacity of our staff and board.  However, this land protection project affords RTC an opportunity and, indeed, a necessity to build enduring partnerships throughout our community.
My initial conversations with individuals and organizations have established the willingness of numerous parties to join us in managing and expanding this site as a high profile, community amenity.   Some of the potential uses for the woods include nature camps for children and people of all ages; nature education center for groups including churches, social organizations, etc.; conference center; bed-and-breakfast; and meeting hall.
But, first things first.  The Girl Scouts of Central Indiana have decided that they are going to sell Camp Munsee.  Red-tail Conservancy has decided that the woods is a top priority, natural area worthy of our efforts to permanently preserve it.  To join in this quest, please call or e-mail the Red-tail office to share YOUR  ideas and concerns, as I remain...

Joy Vander Hill Wins
Yuhas Woods Photo Contest

Joy Vander Hill's Winning Photo
Joy Vander Hill captured the beauty of Yuhas Woods in her winning photograph of Wild Geraniums.  Her photograph will be printed and framed by sponsors Jack's Camera Shop and Gordy's Fine Art and Framing.
Blustery weather kept the attendance low at this spring's Yuhas Woods Wildflower Celebration.  However, the wildflowers put on their usual spectacular display for all to enjoy.  As is often the case, Harbinger-of-spring, Twinleaf, Bloodroot, Dutchmen Britches completed their flowering cycle before our celebration.  This year was a bit unusual because joining the above  plants with  an early retreat were the Virginia Bluebells, and the Large-flowered Trilliums were even beginning to wilt.
However, the Wild Hyacinths, Wild Geraniums, Blue Phlox, Eastern False Rue Anemone, Prairie Trilliums, and  many other gorgeous woodland wildflowers carried the day.  There is always something to appreciate and admire in Yuhas Woods.  All Red-tailers are welcomed to visit this spectacular living museum.  Call the office for a guided tour or take a little jaunt just south of Unionport to enjoy the best nature has to offer in east central Indiana.
Many thanks to this year's sponsors, Jack's Camera shop and Gordy's Fine Art and Framing.

FLIGHT...for the Land
Helen and Al
Less than Two Weeks Away

I'm sure most of you are aware that  Dr. Helen Steussy and her daughter Al have been planning and training for their epic bicycle journey across North America to raise awareness and support for land conservation.  Months in the planning, we are less than two weeks away from the beginning of the trans-continental ride. Nearly $3,000 have been donated and pledged on their behalf in support of land conservation.

Help them to complete their 3,630 mile journey by pledging so much a mile or so much a day (50 total days)...how about $1.00 for every Red-tailed Hawk they see along the way?  Pledges can be made on the Website link below.  Just click on "Make a Pledge" in the navigation block for the online pledge form.  You can donate to FLIGHT...for the Land on the RTC website.   You can even follow Helen and Al's preparation and training as well as the day to day experiences along the way by clicking on the Blog link below.

Let's all "get on board" and match Helen and Al's dedication to land conservation by sending them off with an enormous pledge package to inspire them throughout their epic journey across America.
