September Happenings

2010
Greetings!

Please save the date Friday, October 1st for our second Member Cocktail Party.  We had such a great turnout for our first cocktail party we hope you will join us again. This will be a nice way to catch up with your fellow members, staff and our owners.  Start your evening and weekend with a glass of wine and light hors d'oeuvres.  Again, we encourage you to invite a guest.

As we re-enter the routine of early morning school drop-offs, homework, after-school activities and early sunsets, please don't forget to check the September class schedule.  Classes have been added back in to accommodate the higher usage again and a few of the classes have had time and or instructor changes.

For those of you traveling out of town this weekend please travel safely.

In health,

Chris

What's Cooking this Month?
Here's a salad for the season. Perfect timing, as the pomegranates on the trees are bursting with ripeness.

Your house will smell amazing! The herbs permeate the meat beautifully. You may use the leftovers for sandwiches...if there are any!
Very fluffy and great favor. Serve with Ina's  Herb-Marinated Turkey Breast for a dinner party

Personal Trainer Darren Worts was at it again...
Darren completed the legendary Leadville 100 Trail Run "Race Across The Sky" held in Leadville, CO August 21.  The gruelling 100 mile run is 50 miles out and 50 miles back in the midst of the Colorado Rockies.  Low point is 9,200 feet; the high point is Hope Pass at 12,600 feet.  A majority is on forest trails with some mountain roads.
Gruelling?...845 runners started the race; 362 finished.  Darren placed 69th: with a time of 24:19:40

Food fight  Food Fight!

As a health-conscious person, you try to toss nutrient-packed foods into your grocery cart.  But when you're deciding between seemingly similar nutritious items (say, turkey or chicken?), you may not know the superior choice.  While you can't go wrong eating both quinoa and brown rice, choosing the nutritional champ may give your workouts the boost it needs.  In a healthy-food smackdown, here are our winning picks.
Does Music Make You Exercise Harder?

In a study published last year, British researchers asked 12 healthy male college students to ride stationary bicycles while listening to music that, as the researchers primly wrote, "reflected current popular taste among the undergraduate population." Each of the six songs chosen differed somewhat in tempo from the others.
Each had his heart rate, power output, pedal cadence, enjoyment of the music and feelings of how hard the riding felt monitored throughout each session. During one of the rides, the six songs ran at their normal tempos. During the other rides, the tempo of the tracks was slowed by 10 percent or increased by 10 percent. The riders were not informed about the tempo manipulations.

But their riding changed significantly in response. Read the full story...
