Three Generations of Claro's

I had the wonderful opportunity 30+ years ago to work for this family in the deli of their San Gabriel store.
Many busy years gone by, before we reconnected when Rosemarie & Mary Linda visited my booth at Los Angeles County Fair. Claro's Italian Markets offer our full selection of Olive Oils, Balsamics, Dipping Sauces & several of our Italian Seasoning blends.
For Claro's Italian Market, it all began when Giuseppe Claro came over on the boat from Canetto in 1924. This young and ambitious Italian was 16 years old when he began his career in food as a worker in the slaughterhouses of East Los Angeles.
It wasn't much later that he met and married his lifelong sweetheart Mary.
Together the couple bought their first home in San Gabriel, CA. That same home was eventually traded for what was and still is, the original Claro's Italian Market. Joe and Mary lived in the back and set up a little store in front. Joe would continue his days at the slaughterhouse, while Mary would tend the store. At that time it was an "Italian-American Market".
Back in the 20's, sausage was the specialty at Claro's, as it still is 80 years later.
Eventually, Frank Claro purchased the business from his father in 1958. Frank Claro saw the beginning of the "Supermarket Era" and decided to make Claro's a specialty market, an Italian Market. He focused on only Italian food products, salami cheeses, baccala, fresh foccacia and the very best San Marciano canned tomatoes.
This strategy has worked well for the Claro Family, as their Markets are thriving in (6) Southern California locations (listed below).

This year, I decided to go all out and plant a pretty big garden! I was able to harvest some lettuce for a large family gathering a week ago. However, I did find some lovely green worms - before the salad was served, of course!
My neighbor, Susan, has been gardening for years and does everything totally organic. She loaned me a copy the "Giant Book of Garden Solutions" by Jerry Baker. Great book - easy to follow and contains just under 2,000 remedies.
Hopefully, I will find the right solution to those green worms...more to come!

Oregon White Truffles

Truffles have a culinary mystique that meshes seamlessly and reciprocally with Oregon's reputation for outstanding quality of life. As a pinnacle of high cuisine, culinary truffles have the potential to improve the already strong branding of Oregon grown specialty foods and the positive perception of the state as a whole. Truffles will promote Oregon and, in turn, Oregon's growing reputation as a culinary destination will promote its truffles. Environmentally, truffles are not only suited to our climate and soils, but can be produced in a sustainable and ecologically friendly manner. They lend themselves to low-input and organic farming methods, and require few resources for production and distribution. One of Oregon's native truffle species grows in coastal streamside forests that enhance salmon habitat; all of them thrive in newly-planted forests that sequester the greenhouse gas CO2.

Recipe for June
Unfortunately, there were no Contest Recipe Entries for May!
So, I am going to share a recipe that has been featured on my website before, but think it is a good one to repeat for Summer parties!
Babyback Pork Ribs
3 racks babyback pork rib 2 tablespoons Migliore Medium Hot Italian seasoning, or to taste
Rub Migliore seasoning on meaty side of ribs generously. Bake Ribs bone side down, covered, in oven at 225° for 6 to 7 hours. I use a roasting pan.
Makes 10 Servings.
*You may substitute Migliore Northern Italian seasoning. |
