Classic logoMessage from the President
I would like to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU for your ongoing support of the Bread of Life. My gratitude is particularly heartfelt because of the fact that despite these tough economic times, people from all over are continuing to find a place in their heart to help those less fortunate.
And your support couldn't come at a better time because as of December 2009, one out of four homeless families was living in a motel room. We are not immune to this statistic as evidenced by the fact that the Bread of Life is now delivering cooked meals and groceries to over 100 homeless families living in local motels.
Another startling statistic is that one in eight Americans are now receiving food stamps, including one out of every four children! With the number of children the Bread of Life serves steadily increasing, we are even taking the step to increase the number of Easter baskets for children caught in the economic malaise.
As you can see, we need your help more than ever! Please continue to do what you can to help the Bread of Life by contacting us at 781-397-0404 or by visiting our website here. Together we can continue to make a difference for our fellow citizens during their time of need. Again, thank you!

Classic logoEaster Dinner Open to All
Bread of Life is hosting it's annual Easter Dinner on Easter Sunday, April 4, 2010 from noon - 2 PM at St. Paul's Parish, 26 Washington Street, Malden. The dinner is free of charge, and open to anyone in need or alone for the holiday. No reservations needed. The Friends of Francis from St. Francis of Assisi Church in Medford will serve the meal. Marty Murphy, owner of Marty's Caterers at Montvale Plaza in Stoneham is donating the turkey, mashed potatoes and stuffing as he has done for many years now. The Friends of Francis are donating the vegetables, salad, bread and candy. Colleen's in Medford Square is donating desserts. The children of the St. Francis of Assisi School wrap the silverware in napkins with colorful ribbons. The meal is coordinated by Gerri and Vinny DiClemente, the coordinators of the friends of francis group that provides a regular BOL meal every 2nd Friday of the month.

New LogoReflections From the Director
As food insecurity increases during hard economic times, we continue the search for space to consolidate Bread of Life operations. Storage - or the lack of it - has become an ongoing issue. Our long-time goal has been to have the meals/kitchen/dining room, pantry/meals storage & pantry distribution, and office/operations "under one roof". This is an ideal time to acquire property, before the economy improves, and a difficult time to do so, because funds to underwrite a purchase are harder to come by. We are blessed with the hospitality, patience and charity of St. Paul's Episcopal Parish & First Baptist Church of Malden, our host sites.
As a member of the Tri-City Haitian Relief committee, I have been impressed with the many generous acts & offerings of our neighbors & friends. Pastors of four Haitian congregations, all members of the Tri-City Hunger Network, have organized drives to collect tents & tarps for emergency shelter. Three of them have already traveled to Haiti, bringing much-needed medical supplies, nurses to provide emergency care & basic medical instruction, and hope. Recovery from this great human tragedy will be a long, slow, painful process. Donations can be made to Haiti Relief Fund, c/p Century Bank, 140 Ferry Street, Malden.
Thanks to a gift from The Lenny Zakim Fund, BOL will expand the role of our outreach worker. She has been working with homeless families displaced into area motels, and will work with patrons of our Everett food pantry. Our goal is to offer outreach & advocacy services to all BOL guests and patrons.
Without the support of so many, who generously donate their time, food, money and more, Bread of Life would be woefully unable to meet the many requests for assistance. Thank you, for all that you do!

Peace & Love, etc.

  • Our relationship with Haiti has deepened in recent weeks. Several local families have taken in Haitians displaced by the earthquake. We have seen some of these families with children seeking help from our food pantry. Through a gift from an anonymous donor, BOL was able to purchase 21 large tarps and 600 feet of rope for Haiti relief. These were personally delivered to Haiti by Pastor Laguerre of the Philadelphie Seventh Day Adventist Church of Malden.
  • A teenage girl whose family is homeless and sheltered in one of the motels BOL serves, always comes out with her mother to meet the BOL van and get food. When we first saw the young woman, she mentioned that she was having difficulty sleeping at night. Some weeks later, she said that she really appreciates BOL coming to the motel, and not only because of the food. "I think it's amazing that with all the people you see, you still have time to ask me how I'm doing and if I'm sleeping better now.

Classic logoStimulus money helps homeless families
Many people these days are talking about federal stimulus funds and whether they are really being spent on creating jobs and helping people. Bread of Life is part of local efforts that are right on target.
In October 2009, Bread of life was awarded approximately $50,000 of stimulus funds (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act) through Tri-City, Community Action Program, Inc. (Tri-CAP) in Malden, serving Metro North Boston. These funds are enabling us to operate a one - year program to prepare and deliver meals and groceries to about 67 homeless families each week sheltered in local motels. To operate this program, we hired three part-time staff: a Kitchen Coordinator, Kitchen Assistant, and Outreach Worker. In addition to the meals and food staples, the Outreach Worker brings baby food, clothing and toiletries. She also provides important advocacy and referrals for the families as they deal with housing, school and health issues.
During the month of February, BOL delivered 680 meals and 269 bags of groceries, totaling 2,179 pounds of food to these families.
Bol is one of three local agencies sub-contracting for Tri-CAP's stimulus-funded programs, including a youth employment program with The Career Place for 20 out-of-school and at-risk youth, and ESOL classes for 45 students through the Everett Literacy Program.
In Memoriam: Richard Negri

Richard, a longtime BOL Food Pantry volunteer, died at the age of 56 after a long battle with cancer. He was a hard worker who loved helping people and being part of BOL. He was extremely proud of being one of our 2006 Volunteers of the Year. We will always remember Richard for his thoughtfulness: keeping the pantry storage area neat, shoveling snow in front of the office, helping volunteers with their cars, fixing bikes for free, carrying groceries for people, setting aside special treats that he knew you liked, and more. Richard, may you rest in God's eternal peace.
