MARKETPLACE LESSONS

The response to the Marketplace Lesson of two weeks ago was overwhelming.  Many QuickBites readers emailed to say how much finishing the statement, "business would be better if only..." affected them.  Most often they said that they realized things they hadn't thought about before.  Many said they had formulated new intentions--and some even went as far as to begin executing their intentions.

Another result was a deluge of new questions they felt needed to be asked--and answered.

I've summarized all the questions for those who emailed me--and for all readers I've chosen the two questions I feel to be very valuable in moving yourself and your organization forward this year.

What am I doing to respond to the needs of those with whom I work?  (Do I even know for sure what those needs are?)

What am I doing to respond to the needs of my customers?         (Do I even know for sure what those needs are today?)

LESSON LEARNED:
"Sharing really does make the idea pool larger and more exciting."
-Sam Geist

THE STATS

Just because employees are not leaving does not necessarily mean that they are happy and engaged working in organizations where there has been layoffs.
  • 40% of respondents whose workplaces experienced layoffs in the past year feel that the overall productivity of their organization has been negatively impacted
  • 38% of respondents employed full or part-time said there had been layoffs in the past year at their primary place of employment
  • Of those respondents who said that productivity had been negatively impacted by layoffs:
    • 66% said that morale has suffered and people are less motivated
    • 64% said that there is too much work and not enough people to do it
    • 37% said the wrong people or departments were laid off, leaving inefficient systems and workflows
    • 36% said they are concerned that as the economy picks up, they won't have the right resources to meet demand
  • 53% of respondents said they felt the right number of people were laid off at their organization.  (Thirty-two percent said they felt too many were laid off and seven percent said not enough were laid off).
  • 50% said employers should look for ways to improve morale
  • 36% of employees believe that organizations need to take a fresh look at how to redistribute the workload among those employees who are left.

----------------------------------------

The Accenture 2010 Consumer Electronics Products and Services Usage Report indicated that emerging-market consumers are more willing to pay a premium for "environmentally friendly" consumer products [based on a survey of 16,000 consumers in four "mature" countries (the United States, Germany, France and Japan) and four "emerging" countries (China, India, Malaysia and Singapore)].

Among the key findings:  Compared with consumers in mature countries, consumers in emerging countries are:
  • more than two and a half times as likely to buy a smartphone during the next year (52% vs. 20%)
  • more than twice as likely to have bought a smartphone in the apst year (67% vs. 32%)
  • twice as likely to have bought a computer in the past year (40% vs. 20%)
  • more than twice as likely to have at least occasionally played video games on handheld devices (58% vs. 28%)
  • nearly twice as likely to have at least occasionally connected with people on social networks (69% vs. 38%)
  • significantly more than likely to pay a premium for consumer products marketed as being environmentally friendly (84% vs. 50%).

THE QUOTES

"Keep your thoughts positive, because your thoughts become your words.  Keep your words positive, because your words become your behaviors.  Keep your behaviors positive, because your behaviors become your habits.  Keep your habits positive, because your habits become your values.  Keep your values positive because your values become your destiny."
-Mahatma Gandhi

"In the midst of a downturn like the one we are experiencing, the time is right for employers to re-examine existing practices:  from how work is distributed among the organization; to whether or not new hires need to be made; to what kinds of technology might enable the workforce to become more productive.  In this survey, we hear loud and clear from employees that these issues need to be addressed now, so that businesses are positioned for success when the economy kicks back into high gear."

The Workforce Institute, Kronos
