Greetings!
The last time I looked at the temperature today it was 70 degrees.  This kind of weather makes you want to do something in the yard, doesn't it.
We are readying the greenhouses for the 2000+ rose bushes that will arrive later this month.  I have nearly 1000 that we are growing that are under winter protection that will also need to come into the greenhouse before the end of February so this is a big month for the staff here at Roses inc.  Lyuba is in the Greenhouse today laying out the rows for the plants to assure each one will have its place.  Derrick has been a jack of all trades, re-finishing most of our wagons, repairing the breaks and brokens from last season and just generally working in so many directions I do not know where to find him most of the time.  Any of you who have contacted us in the last weeks have most likely talked with Teresa who manages the bookkeeping and store/order taking/mail orders/ phone orders/phone answering/sending out information--you get the idea, duties while Roberta is reviewing rose list to see if there is anything we have forgot.  Karen and I have potted up some young roses over the past few weeks for next years crop and we have blooms in the greenhouse and the air is sweet with their aroma.  It is such a blessing that we have this beautiful weather to get this work done.  Last year at this time the big green house was crushed under 3 foot of snow and it was nearly impossible to get anywhere.  Tomorrow Derrick will pour concrete for several watering stations.  It is hard to imagine that things can be so different.
We here at roses inc. are happy with the prospects of a new year and a wonderful selection of top quality rose bushes and hope you will allow us to help you with your rose gardening needs this year.
Mark

It is not time to plant roses here is Green Country

Set down if you are not already setting because I have something to tell you that may take you by surprise.  Are you ready?  OK, here goes.  We are right smack dab in the middle of winter.  Don't be fooled by the weather the last several weeks.  It is going to get cold and we will most likely have snow, single digit temps, ice or all the above before winter is over in mid March.  I do not care who has rose bushes for sale now.  Unless you have an uncontrollable urge to dig a hole in your yard, you are just wasting time, and money.

As I always do, I bought some roses at a local box store a couple of weeks ago to see what they were selling.  I can not tell my readers what is there by what I saw in years past so I spend a few dollars each Spring to test the offerings.

I spent several minutes going through the selection of roses stacked there on the bench.  There were no quality grade 1 roses in the offering and most would grade out to be culled. The roses had just got in the store so although they were inside the warm store they had not broken dormancy or at least it wasn't evident. I picked only roses that did not have any or little new growth.  All were covered with wax.  I took the bushes home and begin to unwrap them.  In most cases the sawdust and paper in the bags was dry and the roots were dead or dying. We got some great photos of them but they are not available to me at this time. No matter how the top looks, if the roots are dead the rose will not survive.  I had to trim off a lot of dead root.  Sometimes the root was dead within 2 inches of the main can of the plant.  I trimmed the tops of the plant down to match the roots and potted the roses.  Next month I will give you an update on the progress of these plants.  After two weeks they have grown very little.  Some have a few swollen buds and a couple have a leaf set.  They are all in the greenhouse and while these have not grown I have some liners within a couple of feet that have grown 6 inches in the same amount of time.

Book your Roses for 2012 now for best selection.

My goal here at Roses inc. Tulsa is to have a good selection of roses ready for planting 8 months each year and while we do keep a fantastic variety, there are always some that sell out quickly.  We have held our pricing at last years level and have already took orders for hundreds of the new crop.  We have not sold out any varieties as of this time but some are down to the last few so order now to get the roses you want.  Please e-mail or call us with your order.  Our nation wide toll free order line is 855-294-3037.  Locally you may call 918-455-7673 or our e-mail is Rosesinctulsa@cox.net.  We will pull your roses and mark them with your name for pick up in early April or ship your bare root in late February or early March.  In an effort to help our customers with the ever increasing price of shipping we will obtain the exact cost of shipping your roses to you and call you with the total prior to shipping.  We only ship bare root roses due to the extreme shipping cost of potted roses.

Our Price: $29.95 each
3 or more: $26.95
Bare Root: $20.95 plus shipping

The Most Important Cut

The Spring pruning of your rose bushes is the most important thing to be done correctly to have your bushes thrive through out the year.  Pruning rose bushes isn't just a matter of cutting them back to a certain height or leaving a certain number of stems on each bush.  It goes way beyond that.  I have been pruning roses for a very long time and throughout the years I have perfected my technique for pruning to give the bushes the best start they can have.  I routinely salvage Rose bushes that were thought to be past saving while making climbers bloom that have failed to bloom in the past.  My customers have nicknamed me The Rose Doc.
Each year I prune several hundred Rose bushes for new as well as long time rose growers.  I will take time to show you the ropes or I will do it all for you.  Each of your bushes will be sprayed with dormant oil upon competition of the pruning so all you will be left to do is watch them grow.  I am a Licensed Pesticide Applicator. State of Oklahoma License # 24800.  An ARS Consulting Rosarian and Master Gardner.  We are bonded and we guarantee our work.  We are the oldest Rose Care Firm in Oklahoma and the only exclusive rose care professionals in Green Country and we would be honored to help you have the prettiest Rose garden in your neighborhood.  We start pruning around the middle of March, the weather allowing, so please call during February to schedule pruning at your garden.
I want each of you to know how important is is to me personally that you have a beautiful rose garden.  The staff and I here at Roses inc. Tulsa will do everything we can to help you succeed in growing beautiful roses.  Never hesitate to call upon us anytime you have Rose Questions or concerns.  We are here to help.

Sincerely,
Mark

A personal word or two.  Some of you know I had knee replacement surgery on January 16 and have been recuperating since.  The knee is on the mend and I wish to say thanks to all who have called and those who prayed for my quick recovery. I am ahead of schedule.

Please excuse the lack of educational material this month in the news letter.  I write it myself each month and this month it has been a little tough to clear my head long enough to get the information onto the pages.
Thanks for understanding.
