Rosebush

Pruning

The most important cut of the year!

We begin our custom pruning for Spring 2011 the second week of March and are now taking reservations.  Roses that are pruned correctly will outperform poorly pruned bushes in both disease resistance and flower size.  Call now for your appointment.
January/2011
Greetings!

Winter is here but unlike some parts of the country it has been terribly dry here in Green Country Oklahoma. I have had to water the roses twice in December and I am only a week away from another watering if it does not rain appreciably in that time.  Our roses do not require as much watering in the winter months as they do in the hot summer months but we must not them dry out.  It is especially important to make sure they are well hydrated going into severely cold weather that we experience here normally for the next several weeks.  That said; If you have not watered your garden lately you should do it before Friday when the extreme cold air is due to arrive.
Gophers are on the move

Top: mole mound, notice how soil is just pushed up.

Bottom:  The soil is in small granules because it was stored in the gopher's pockets to be hauled out of the tunnel. Four inches out from the v shape at the top of the photo is where you should inject the Go Die Gopher bait.

The other day I watched a neighbor with gopher mounds in abundance in his otherwise beautiful yard as he was digging to place smoke bombs in the ground in hopes to stop the damage being caused by a Gopher.  Gophers are not social animals and one of these rodents can ruin a garden with no help at all.  The have the ability to dig 40 feet of tunnel in one night.  Seldom is there ever more than one adult in a normal size city lot.  They are very territorial and will not tolerate company.

Smoke Bombs are seldom effective in the fight against Gophers.  The structure of their burrows provide them with protection from the poison smoke which is lighter than air and is always moving in an upward direction.

Poison Peanuts  are also very ineffective in killing the Gophers as is the pellets sold to kill both Gophers and moles.  Many a dollar has been waisted buying products that just plain don't work.

Go Die Gopher bait is one product that really works against the Gophers and Voles that eat the roots of your roses.  It is a seed that is coated with a very effective poison that is also infused with an alluring smell that attracts the rodents.  One application done the correct way will rid your garden of the rodents for several months depending on the amount of moisture  that is available to decay the dead rodent.  The tunnel is safe from being re-occupied as long as the remains are decaying in the tunnel.  This is the same reason why traps are not a good way of ridding your garden of Gophers and Voles.  Yes they do catch the critters when they are used properly but an empty tunnel is just an invitation for a new tenet to move in.

Go Die Gopher is available here at Roses inc. Tulsa.  We also sell a very handy application tool to make the job much easier.  Call or come by for the products and advise you need to be successful at ridding your garden of these destructive pest.

Dormant Oil
The time is now

Dormant oil is a product that coats our rose bushes with a fine layer of oil that effectively suffocates insect, mite and disease pests.  It is a great product that is very easily used and is very effective in killing any of the pest left over from the previous growing season.  We wait until the time period of late December to early March to use it because if the oil is used in warmer weather it will burn the foliage.  Using the winter spray will give you a head start on your pest control for the coming season.
Here at Roses inc. Tulsa I opt to use Lime Sulfer spray which I have found to be more effective if complete coverage is not achieved.  Both products are easily applied with a sprayer as they are both water soluble.

Whether you opt for the Dormant Spray of the Lime Sulfer spray we have what you need here at roses inc. Tulsa.  Drop by and visit and I will help you decide which product is the best for you.

In just the past week we have finished our new on line catalog.  I hope you will go on line at Roses inc.
