Japanese beetle damage
Above are photos of the Japanese beetle and the damage it causes.  The Japanese beetle is a relative newcomer to Oklahoma with OSU first having meetings about its potential impact on crops first occurring last fall.
The adult beetle attacks both the bloom and the leaves giving both a tattered appearance.  They normally do not do enough damage to kill the bushes but they make them real unsightly.
I have found that the pest way to control the amount of damage is to spray the beetles with Malathion during the daytime when you see them on the roses.  They will groom themselves and be killed quickly before doing any further damage to the leaves or flowers.  Another good pesticide to use for the control of the Japanese beetle is Acephate.  It is a systemic that will kill the beetles as they feed.
If you would like to go the no pesticide route you can use a trap to decrease the number of beetles feeding on your roses.  The trap must be placed in the proper area to work efficiently.
We have all of the above pesticides and the traps available at Roses inc. and will be happy to give you instruction on how to use them.

Greetings!

Summer temperatures were early this year with June being nearly the hottest on record.   I am sure that some of you have seen the unseasonable heat in the light colored blooms burnt around the edges and the decrease in their size.  These things are normal and can be expected during the hot months.  You can counteract the effects of the heat to some degree by making sure you have a thick layer (4") of mulch around the rose bushes right up to the stems.
Spider Mites are still causing problems with some of our roses and Japanese beetles have made their Spring debut.  Although they are a nuisance they do not have to ruin your beautiful roses if you stay ahead of them.  Remember to inspect your roses as you enjoy them and react at the first sign of anything wrong.  This with the preventative maintenance we recommend will keep your roses thriving.

 Leaf Damage

Here are two photos I received from a Rosarian friend of mine that will interest you.  The photo showing the circles removed is that of the damage dome by a leaf cutter bee.  The bee (wasp) cuts out these little round chunks of leaf to seal its egss in the nest so they will have food when they hatch.  Though the damage can be very unattractive it will not cause any real damage.
The other photo is of the underside of rose leaves showing the signs of a spider mite infestation in its beginning.  This bush needs to be treated imediately to prevent further damage.  If you see this dirty appearence on the underside of your bushes leaves use Tetra San right away.  We have the Tetra SAn here at roses inc.
