Greetings!

First I would like to apologize for not getting the newsletter to you for November.  In the past the publishing of the newsletter has been a task that was beyond my computer skills so it was relegated to my daughter to do.  With marriage comes extra demands on her time and hence the newsletter did not get published.
I now have a new program to use to get my newsletter out to you and since I can do it myself I only have me to blame if it is late.  I hope you like the new format and I would be happy to hear your thoughts on ways I can make the information and the look of the letter better.
I would also like to take this opportunity to wish you and yours the best. May the blessings of God be with you during this Christmas season and all through the coming year.

Sincerely,
Mark

Winter Watering

Your rose bushes need water to be healthy the year around. In winter the roses fill their canes with a kind of anti-freeze to protect them from freezing.  Without necessary moisture the plant can not produce this antifreeze and the cold will do severe damage to thee bush.
More bushes are lost in the winter from lack of water than from cold.  Water anytime the ground is dry no matter the temperature to keep your roses healthy and the roots growing.

Don't Forget!

If you have not already done so, Mulch your rose beds.  The mulch needs to be at least 4 inches above the bud union and deeper will sure not harm them..  Do not remove any canes that  are not dead until the low in your yard has hit 22 degrees.  At that point you may trim off the top 1/3 of any bush that is 4 foot tall or taller.  Do not trim them if they are supported or protected from the wind.  The top of the bush helps protect the bottom so we want to leave as much of the top in place as we can.  The only reason to prune this time of year is to stop the winter wind from loosening the roses from the ground which will only happen if the
ground freezes.

Display Gardens

The staff and I have started to construct our new Rose gardens.  When they are complete they will include
nearly 400 rose bushes with at least 7 classifications represented. Please plan to come by and see them in the spring.

Spraying in Winter

I know you thought you were done with the spraying of the roses until spring but how about humoring me one more time and give them a good spraying of Dormant Oil to clean up any left over insects or disease.  Pick a pretty day sometime in the next 3 weeks and give them enough spray to drip off the leaves. Be sure to cover both the tops and bottoms of the leaves as well as the canes. Then just for grins spray the ground around the bushes.  Next years insect and disease control will be made much easier if you take the time to do this winter spray.
Remember, if you have a question about growing Roses I am always available to you by phone at 918-455-7673 or by e-mail at astelljes@cox.net
