Chemical Spill After Roll-over

Shuts Down 1-80 for Cleanup

Spill Center was involved in a recent spill of ethyl acrylate after a tractor trailer rolled over during the night on I-80 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. About 40 gallons were released, drawing local and state police as well as fire department personnel to the scene. Police attempted to dispatch their preferred contractor to handle the cleanup operation, but no crew was available. Spill Center was contacted shortly after the accident to find a contractor who could respond.

After researching cleanup contractors in the vicinity of the release, Spill Center compliance associates contacted 10 companies to determine their availability and found that none had crews at the ready. Then, finally, success. An associate dispatched a contractor from 75 miles away who left immediately for the site with a crew.

The state DEP, DOT and county Office of Emergency Management arrived and remained on the scene throughout the night. By daylight, the inside lane of I-80 was still closed as the contractor transferred product from the leaking trailer and cleaned up the site. The Spill Center compliance associate maintained contact with the contractor and undated the transporter on the status of the work until the job was completed.

Spill Center maintains a database with detailed information on more than 3,000 environmental contractors who are qualified to handle releases.
