Hazmat? Why Spill Center?
If
you don't handle hazmat, why would you want Spill Center services? Because not
all regulated spills involve cargo. More than half of all over-the-road
releases involve the diesel fuel in the truck's saddle tanks - about an even
split between broken fuel crossover lines and saddle-tank punctures.
When
it comes to fines and penalties for failure to report, enforcement and
compliance requirements, most jurisdictions do not distinguish between diesel
fuel and hazmat. They view them the same. The average amount of fuel spilled in
a saddle-tank release is 104 gallons. The average cost to clean it up
nationwide is $9,400. Fines for non-compliance can total thousands of dollars.
A
leading LTL carrier (not a Spill Center client) was fined nearly $84,000 for
failure to report a hazmat spill. Federal fines have been raised from $25,000 per
day to $100,000 per day, with each day being a separate and continuing
violation. That is because the US DOT views hazardous materials in
transportation as a significant security threat.
