Dealing with the Media During a Spill Emergency

Spill Center Welcomes
Zurich Online Program

Spill Center® has teamed up with Zurich, one of the world's largest property-casualty insurance companies, to provide an online service that assists its North American customers with the cleanup of spills of hazardous materials, fuel and other regulated materials. Offered free-of-charge to Zurich customers, the Spill Reporting Online System will assist in dispatching cleanup contractors, reducing costs associated with environmental releases, expediting regulatory reporting and mitigating potential liability.

"Zurich is collaborating with Spill Center®, a leading environmental spill management specialist with nearly 20 years of experience, to help our customers deal with events that require emergency environmental cleanup," relates Kenneth Berger, executive vice president of Zurich's environmental unit.

"By tapping into a team that is experienced in environmental emergency response, investigation and remediation, our customers that use Zurich's Spill Reporting Online System will be better able to contain costs and limit their liability for incidents with environmental releases."

President of Spill Center and environmental attorney Tom Moses explains: "Spill Center maintains a database of more than 3,000 contractors throughout North America to assist customers in identifying appropriate local resources for particular kinds of spills. Zurich and Spill Center also monitor the scope of work and cleanup, and then review the contractor's invoice for accuracy."

In addition, Spill Center assists in:
  • Coordinating local, state and federal release reporting
  • Monitoring nearly 30,000 federal, state and local jurisdictions across the U.S. that require incident reports after a spill
  • Tracking changes in regulations and maintaining current environmental reporting regulations and contact information, which may help Zurich customers avoid fees and penalties if they miss reporting deadlines
Users of the system receive electronic copies of paperwork generated by the spill incident, including an open release report, contractor retention documentation, regulatory paperwork, invoices and a closing report.

Zurich offers a large portfolio of environmental products and services to meet the needs of businesses in real estate development, manufacturing, contracting and hazardous materials transportation, as well as professional liability insurance for design professionals. With more than 16 years of experience in offering environmental products, Zurich underwrites coverage through offices in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Denver, San Francisco and Glendale, California.
