A Record 8,873 People Served for Thanksgiving
8,873 of our neighbors enjoyed a holiday meal complete with a turkey and all the trimmings for Thanksgiving.  Almost 2200 families recieved a turkey box this year, an increase of 36% from 2009. People in Kyle, Buda, Wimberley, San Marcos, Martindale, and outlying areas were glad to get the holiday help in this slow economy.

"Many of us sit down to a holiday feast and take that privilege for granted," says Pat Tessaro, Food Bank Community Relations Coordinator. "For families who have lost a job, face high medical bills or foreclosure, affording that traditional turkey dinner can be an expensive luxury that is out of their reach.  These people really appreciate celebrating Thanksgiving with their families because of the turkey box program. That makes the time, money, and effort we put into turkey season all worthwhile."

Turkey boxes cost almost $40,000 this year, especially with the increase in the number of people that got a box.  The money is used to buy the turkeys and other food items. That's a lot of cranberry sauce and stuffing!

Thanks to everyone who donated to our annual "Turkeys Tackling Hunger" campaign that raises money for Thanksgiving.

A job well done to Ted Gomez from the HEB Grocery Store on Thorpe Lane in San Marcos and the HEB partners who volunteered their time to assemble almost 2200 turkey boxes. And they did it all in under 6 hours!

Many thanks to our volunteers and partner agencies who helped deliver boxes to families all over the County.

Non profits all over the country are struggling to meet the challenges of the economic slowdown.  Recent surveys of U.S. nonprofits reveal that, while the decline in overall donations have slowed from the rapid decline seen in 2009 when 51% of organizations surveyed reported a decrease, charitable giving has not yet rebounded to levels reported in 2006 and 2007.

The most recent survey shows that 37% of charities saw a decrease in giving in the first nine months of 2010.  (Source: The Nonprofit Research Collaborative, November 2010 Fundraising Survey, published by GuideStar.)
