The 5-Minute Life Tune-Up! |
|
 | The Season is The Gift |
| |
Happy Celebration Time to all of you out there! The warm twinkling Chanukkah lights remind me to notice and appreciate all the warm love and community that surrounds me now and all year long. And, I know I have a wonderful community of Tune-Up readers on the other end of this screen.
As I was out for a chilly winter's walk today, I started to think about this season as a time of giving and also as a time of gratitude for all our abundance. I looked out at the beautiful and icy Mystic River and pondered what what could be a little gift to you that might add a tiny bit of warmth and richness to your lives during these upcoming cold months. I decided that I wanted to take this month's Tune-Up to share with you a few of my favorite things...to read, to enjoy, for your growth, for your good health, and just for fun! And, I would love to hear about your favorite things as well. If you like my "editor's picks", send yours along too! It's fun to give and it's fun to receive! |

Books and More!
First up are books - here are some great ones, most of which have had a big impact on life and my work. Very recently I read The Happiness Trap by Russ Harris which is a wonderful, clearly written book about using mindfulness and an attitude of acceptance (of our feelings and thoughts) to help us to focus on what's most important to us and to move forward in our lives. Taming Your Gremlin by Rick Carson is a quirky but amazing book that also uses a mindfulness-based approach for managing the negative voices in our heads. I highly recommend this book - I use it in my coaching and in my life as well. A great book that beautifully addresses communication in all kinds of relationships is Nonviolent Communication by Marshall Rosenberg. It offers a model of communicating that is very open and human while also providing a framework for resolving conflicts peacefully.
A unique, practical, and lively little book on goal setting and career development is Wishcaft by Barbara Sher. Although it was written 30 years ago, it's just as relevant today as ever. One thing I love about it is its emphasis on garnering mutual support in the quest to find one's path in life. Many career development books forgo this simple and salient advice. Another book that deals with building support and getting things done is You Don't Have To Do It Alone by Richard H. Axelrod, et al. This book is great for organizations or for anyone who has a project to do and wants to convene a team to get it done. Small business owners and solo practitioners of all types can benefit from the brilliant marketing advice of C.J. Hayden's Get Clients Now! C.J. demystifies the marketing process and offers a rigorous but common-sense plan for selling professional services.
Beyond books - If you are preparing to look your best in 2011 and would love some help evaluating what's in your closet or on the racks in the clothing stores, I recommend Ginger Burr of Total Image Consultants. Ginger has over 20 years of experience helping folks in the Boston area to discover their own unique personal style. And, she's a tremendously nice person as well! Business owners seeking a very smart and savvy mediator/executive coach should consider working with Scott Loring of Cooperative Coaching and Mediation. I was very glad I did, as he had a tremendous impact on my work. I recommend him highly!
There is nothing like a bubbly hot tub on a cold winter's day. The tubs and massages over at Inman Oasis in Cambridge, MA are to die for! And, the owners and staff are so friendly too. If you go there, tell them Molly the Life Coach sent you. We can't forget food and art: I personally love the healthy, fresh, and delicious vegetarian food at Life Alive in Cambridge and Lowell, MA. The Cambridge location is very new and is already quite the hot spot. Finally, if you are visiting the midwest at all this winter, you have to check out The Kortman Gallery and J.R. Kortman Center for Design in Rockford, IL. It's an easy drive from Madison, Milwaukee, or Chicago and for art buffs, it shouldn't be missed. Plus, The Kortman sells the coolest gifts around. Perfect place for your holiday shopping! |
