New Year's resolution starting to slip a little?
Did you make a New Year's resolution for January either formally pronounced or just casually in your mind? How is it going so far? No matter what your answer is, here's some good news:
You can always get started or re-started on your New Year's resolution at any time during the year! You are making the rules, after all!
Don't give up. You've put energy into setting a goal for yourself and you can succeed. Here are a few quick tips to help you on your path:
- Set up your physical environment for success. What is the location where you'll be focusing your efforts? Spend a half-hour to clear your desk or move the exercise bike to the right spot. Take a short amount of time to do so and don't over-focus on it, but make your environment conducive to your change.
- Start small. Changing a habit is a gradual process. It often requires a slow build-up over time to take hold. Take small steps that are reasonable and realistic for your life. Even a subtle change that you implement once a week at first can make a difference in your life.
- Use the power of momentum! Making changes feels unnatural and awkward at times. You may have to "fake it 'til you make it" and keep going in an almost automatic mode. In practice it means to "keep on keepin' on" and just roll with any setbacks along the way - don't give them much heed - just pick up and continue. Nothing can stop you once you're in forward motion!
- Give yourself a phrase or "mantra" to keep in mind to help you focus on the outcome. Making changes in your thinking is as important as changes in your actions. Choose a statement that resonates with you, write it down, and post it on your mirror or computer or fridge. Some examples: "I'm getting healthier" or "I can be on time every day" or simply "keep going!".
- Use your supports. Change is easiest to make when you have a buddy to do it with or someone to talk to about it. Ask for help even if you're not used to doing that!
