Good News From Baltimore
by Lyman Hafen
Executive Director

In early March I had the privilege, along with other representatives of ZNHA, to attend the Association of Partners for Public Lands conference in Baltimore.  It was an inspiring and enlightening experience, capped with a special national award for ZNHA.  During the APPL Media and Partnership Awards Ceremony at the Inner Harbor Marriott Hotel at Camden Yards, ZNHA was declared winner of the 2009 national award for commemorative projects for our Century of Sanctuary art exhibit and book.  The award recognized the many partnerships that made the project possible and the way in which the art show and its accompanying book fittingly commemorated the Centennial of Zion National Park.

It is always gratifying to have your hard work recognized.  The Century of Sanctuary art project required a tremendous amount of work and expertise from many partners, starting with the great staff and board of Zion Natural History Association.  And it is safe to say that without the dedicated support of our ZNHA members, this project would have never gotten off the ground.  So, from all of us at ZNHA, and
Zion National Park, we thank you, our members, for the support that has resulted in this national recognition.

The project was comprised of the most significant exhibition of Zion National Park art ever mounted...more about the project and the new film by Ken Burns entitled: "THE NATIONAL PARKS:American's Best Idea."

WET WEATHER BRINGS PROMISE
OF SHOWY WILDLFOWER DISPLAY

The wet weather of late gives hope for a stellar wildflower display this spring. Zion Canyon Field Institute (ZCFI) is positioned to take advantage of this with numerous classes focusing on botany this spring.

This botanical bonanza gets started on April 3 & 4 with the increasingly popular "Lytle Preserve" class. April continues with "Zion's Low Desert Wildflowers" on April 10 and "Mojave Wildflowers" on April 25. Folks looking to create more desert-friendly landscaping around their homes can sign up for "Native Plants and Xeriscaping" on April 18. If you want to take a stab at drawing your wildflowers there is "Watercolor Journaling" also on April 18.

May 9 & 10 ZCFI brings a new class entitled "Zion 101" which is the interaction of geology and botany on desert ecosystems. "Kolob Wildflowers" on May 15 moves our enjoyment of the spring wildflower display up to the higher elevations of the Kolob Finger Canyons. Moving up higher still on May 30 we offer our naturalist-guided "Rim to Floor" hike on the East Rim.

On June 13 we are offering another new class "The Hanging Gardens of Zion." Zion is renowned for its "hanging gardens" created by the contact of Navajo sandstone with Kayenta shale. Join us on a Saturday visit to major hanging garden locations in the park where we will hopefully see Scarlet Monkeyflower, Zion Shooting Star, and Columbine in their full splendor.

Zion Canyon Field Institute is the educational arm of Zion Natural History Association and all classes are fee-based. For more information or to register please call 435-772-3264 OR email: plyler.zcfi@yahoo.com. Or go to www.zionpark.org. From the home page click on Field Institute.

Family at shuttle stop in Zion National Park  Zion Shuttle Tips
The Zion National Park shuttle system begins it's 10th year in operation on April 4, 2009.  The season will run through October 25, 2009.  The shuttle operates in the Park along the scenic loop where traffic is restricted to shuttles only, and in the gateway town of Springdale.  As the busy summer season approaches, and in particular on holiday weekends, it can be advantageous to park in Springdale, as the Zion National Park parking lot fills up fairly early.  Upon your arrival in Springdale, check for areas with afternoon shade as they make the best parking spots. Park in town near one of the eight shuttle stops, and ride the free Town shuttle to the Park entrance, where you will walk across a foot bridge to the pedestrian entrance station and transfer to the Park shuttle.  Don't forget to bring water, camera, park pass or receipt for re-entry and of course, your car keys!
Look here for details about the Zion National Park Shuttle system and here for a detailed spring schedule.
Greetings!

Yesterday I had a wonderful walk in the park. It is amazing what
a half hour spent in Zion can do for the spirit. You would be so happy to see Zion coming to life. The winter was moist and already there are patches of green grass and green buds on the trees. If it is possible, I hope you will have a chance to visit Zion this spring. Life will seem all the better for having spent time here.
As a special, only to our e-newsletter readers, we are offering our national award winning book, A Century of Sanctuary, the Art of Zion National Park ($24.95 softcover, $34.95 hardcover) at 10% off. (Members will receive a 30% discount.)
Anytime you have a question, comment or suggestion please feel free to call me at 800-635-3959 or email me at znha@infowest.com. If I don't know the answer, Park Service employees will usually offer the needed help.
Wishing you a very happy spring and may you return to enjoy Zion National Park soon!

Sincerely,

Tracy Jones
