My Newsletter Muse Has HINI

Of course I don't know this for sure, but something is amiss. In the last week, I've started two newsletters and even finished one. The first was entitled "Where One Step Leads" which was a good start but didn't lead anywhere. Actually it did, but it wasn't a place you would have wanted to go. It died a merciful death after two paragraphs.

The second title was, "Leave Me a Message and We'll Connect Soon." What a great subject--connecting! Except that this newsletter never did. Even when fully finished, it was still chasing its rapidly growing tale.

These are not happy moments in Newsletterland--especially when the projected deadline has already passed. What to do?  Well, something besides trying to write a newsletter--that's for sure!

So I turned to my trusty inbox and there I saw a recent gift from my friend, Connie Hill. She'd sent me a video about "genius" from the "Ted Talks." Seemed like the perfect time, lacking as I was in the creative spark. And all the better that the talk was from just the right source too: an author. And not just some author or another, but Elizabeth Gilbert of "Eat, Pray, Love" fame.

Over the next 18 minutes, I clearly understood my unamusing dilemma. My muse, the true source of my inspiration and of any flashes of brilliance that bear my signature, was either ill, on strike or profoundly peeved with me. How to rectify? As if hearing my thoughts, Elizabeth shared an amazing muse "how to" tip! My translation:If your fount of inspiration is quiet or cranky, your responsibility is still to show up for your part of the deal--and dare to get downright gutsy with your invisible partner. So I did: "Hey, I'm here at the computer. Jeans in the seat. Ready to translate. Where are you?"

That's all it took. "Write about your struggle to write," my Muse said as if she thought I'd never ask. "Be more transparent. More honest. More in the moment. Oh, and give me a little more credit, would you?"

I believe I've done just that--and it was easy.

If you are linked to the great Goddess of Creativity in any way, or just enjoyed "Eat, Pray, Love" -- or even if you didn't-- I invite you to listen to Elizabeth Gilbert share her witty and moving and insights about genius and muse on them awhile. May they inspire you! Here's the link and I'll be back in a couple of weeks from Museletterland!

P.S. When I went into my inbox to preview this newsletter, there was a message from Netflix: For Thursday: "A Flash of Genius." Honest.
