Your Life Is an Occasion --Rise to It!
On a whimsy a several months ago, I made a whimsical choice. Instead of ordering up the usual Netflix fare of drama or comedy, I opted for the super silly: Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium! In this family caper, the walls have feelings and the toys are "only toys" to the adults. But surprise! This is a case of silly with depth-the century's old store owner is getting ready to make his grand exit. And upon parting he utters these un-silly words to his young, distraught assistant: "Your life is an occasion, my dear - rise to it!"
I had to look up the title of the movie for this newsletter, and it took me awhile to fetch the household name of Dustin Hoffman from my bulging memory files. (You do know that's why it gets harder, don't you?) But I didn't forget the line! And I know why. It spoke directly to my heart and there were tears to prove it. In the last eight months, as I have shed my reluctance to networking in the name of responding to that call, I am seeing a spectacular, singular momentum in the women all around me. Its essence is this: "I want to touch more people; I want my gifts to make a difference for other women -- for children -- for families." I would go so far as to call it an "Uprising" -- and a glorious one at that.
This mounting wave is not of the future - but of our creative, compelling present. It is a wave of inner energy flowing outward and weaving an intelligent world wide web that is even more miraculous than the one that serves this cause. This isn't, "I am Woman, hear me roar!" This is, "We are Women, watch us soar!" This is a collective, eclectic, benevolent enterprise.
If you are nodding your head in rhythm with your heart, I hope the remainder of this newsletter with encourage and strengthen your resolve and give you a spike o' joy. Oh, the wonder of being part of something bigger than ourselves, but that wouldn't exist in the same way without any one of us! And if you don't feel part of it yet, I hope that my sharing will fling the door open wide and pull you lovingly inside. |
Women on the Rise
1. Give Up the Ghost. My marketer extraordinaire, Michelle Gamble-Risley was a wildly successful young woman in the corporate world, with more credits to her name than most women twice her age. But she was becoming a ghost in her own life. Pummeled by outrageous hours and a "Simona LeGree" boss, she met one night with a Moment of Destiny. Instantaneously, she grabbed the brass ring and started her own business, MGR Consulting. Then, in rising fashion, she went on to write "Second Bloom" with co-author Anne Marie Smith. It's a book that supports women, step-by-step, to transform their own lives.
2. Give Up the Biz. Robin Saltzman is a woman I've never met, but we're spending a lot of time together. She lives in Florida and is taking my astrology course, "Charting Your Own Course." Robin owns Jon's Bridal, the largest bridal shop in Florida. She started it knowing virtually nothing about the bridal biz. ("What's a train?" she had to ask at her first meeting of bridal store owners.) Now she is a lauded and beloved expert. As fulfilling as this once was, the luster of this service has faded, and she feels called to let her once-upon-a-time passion go in order to live happily-ever-after herself. Now she wants to support women inwardly. As she expressed it to me, "I feel duty-bound to use my love of astrology to help women see their own beauty, passion and truth." There's a gal after my own heart!
3. Give Up the Old Model. I met Frances Fayden at a recent eWomen network meeting -- an organization that holds high the banner of, "Give First, Share Always," and talks about "lifting while you climb." As you can imagine, the women who congregate around those vibrant sentiments are the "Rising-Kind." Frances and her business partner, Denise Liu, are no exception. Their company is " Create Your Amazing Life," and like the name, they sparkle with the keen desire to provide women entrepreneurs with great tools and a lively community of support. For them, the old male model of business not only didn't work, but wasn't any fun! Combining spirit and sass, they are helping women actualize their dreams to change the world by being true to themselves. 4. Give Up? Never! It was my distinct pleasure to meet Francie Dillon this week. She is a professor of children's literature at CSUS, but I got the clear feeling from our cocktail conversation at Sudwerk Riverside that it is children themselves that animate and motivate this woman. For many years now, Francie has been following her passion of entertaining children while opening them up to their own magnificence. But now in an economy that's waning, she feels herself revving up. She is writing a book that extends her heart for children out into the cosmos, and is also is inspired to produce a one-woman show of her own stories. "I want women to walk away with two distinct feelings," she says, First, 'Well, I guess I didn't screw up so bad!' " and second, that gigantic, mesmerizing beam of HOPE. 'Til we cross paths again,
