What to Expect From A Great Astrology Reading
My first astrology reading was straight out of a movie script. A little coastal town ... a narrow road snaking upward through the trees ... a house on stilts with a staircase that resembled a ladder ... and at the top, a little dog yapping at the side of a woman with a strange name. For cryin' out loud, even the name of the road that had led me to hers was cinema worthy: "Vision."
If the day had followed Hollywood suit, she would have told me that my soul mate lived in Tibet, and I would be mysteriously guided to his side within a year. But only if I dreamed of him in the next 48 hours!
Instead, after serving me a cup of tea, Judah told me things I already knew. Things I knew, but hadn't admitted. Things I knew, but had forgotten. Things I knew, but didn't trust. Things I knew, but didn't understand. The only extraordinary thing about this experience was that she knew! |
Five Guidelines For A Great Astrology Reading !
1. Support, not surprises. People are often afraid they'll hear something about themselves they'd rather not know -- things that confirm their worst fears. In a great astrology reading, everything should not only be recognizable, but serve as a source of confirmation of your talents, insight into your challenges, illumination of your relationship patterns and support for your calling. For starters. Once a woman's eyes filled with tears as I described her innate talent to negotiate, to articulate both sides of a matter. She had just made a major commitment to mediation training as her first step out of an unfulfilling career.
2. Possibilities, not assumptions. An astrologer doesn't know if you're living the "truth" or the "trash can" of your energies, because no one can tell your state of consciousness by looking at a chart. That is, no one can tell how you're choosing to live the possibilities. Years ago in an astrology workshop, the group was looking at the chart of a class member with a concentration of Pisces energy. The teacher made the point that the full range of Pisces, which has to do with living outside ordinary reality, has to be presented. "In other words," he said playfully, "we don't know if this is the chart of a mystic or a drunk." From across the room, her friend called out, "Depends on what time of day you call."
3. Perspective, not predictions. People expect and often seek predictions from a reading. But prediction is the weakest link in the astrological chain because it leaves out the strongest link: individual choice. "Do I have what it takes to be a successful lawyer?" a young woman asks. If her lawyerly talents intersect in the chart with deep insecurity or a die-hard habit of procrastination, it's not a "yes" or "no" question. The reading can be explicit about the nature of the talent as well as the challenges involved, but the answer lies within.
4. Direction, not dogma. No one can tell you what's right for you, yet a great astrology reading offers insights, options, strategies and support that are based on your specific makeup. What works beautifully for others may not work for you and there's a reason why. The goal here is two-fold: acceptance of your unique design and working with those energies in a conscious, creative way.
5. Soul, not surface. A great astrology reading should be uplifting even if your chart is full of challenges. Because after all, you knew that walking in! If a chart doesn't match your life, what good is it? But to see those challenges in light of the whole, as part of a larger story ... to receive direction for addressing them and gain a sense of purpose within them ... that's the true gift of astrology.
