TURN UP THE HEAT!!!
A first in education reform today... a small, vocal Local School Council on the South Side voted to turn its own school into a charter.

PREDICTION: No charter school operator will take up this call to action. If one does, they deserve big time praise.  Read more...

Caring for Seniors

Upon hearing about the major impact Adult Day Care is making in the lives of senior citizens, we decided to drop in and pay them a visit.

During our stay we heard of Rodney who has been with us since 2008.  We asked Marilyn to tell us his testimony since he was unable to visit that day.

Our staff members go beyond the call of duty every day to serve seniors in Chicago's most impoverished communities.  Often times, their service interrupts their personal lives.  We simply do not have time to read all of the thank you letters Adult Day Care receives each month, but click here to read the letter from Rodney's family.

Parent Social Club Members

On Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at 5:30PM, Chicago Commons held it's first Parent Social Club at the Nia Family Center.  This social club engaged parents in the West Humboldt Park community whose child is not enrolled in a formal daycare.

During this 8-week program, we were able to work with parents to provide support in the education of their child.  Members were given educational materials and asked to spend time with their 2-5 year old each week doing learning activities.  At the end of this program, the children possessed greater recognition of colors, letters and numbers.  In addition, we were able to equip parents with viable resources to create an environment conducive to learning.

When we asked Parent Social Club member Angela, what she liked most about the program, she replied, "I am glad that we were able to come into an environment that is totally positive and free of judgement and criticism.  It has been helpful to meet and have the support of women who live in my community that I otherwise would have never known."

Currently we are confirming dates and times to continue the Parent Social Club as requested by its members.

Saying goodbye is always hard to do...

Mary LongbrakeWe bid farewell to our long time friend and volunteer, Mary Longbrake.  Ms. Longbrake served on the Chicago Commons board for 25 years and organized a service day for Northern Lights, a group of retired employees from Northern Trust.

We commend Ms. Longbrake for her legacy of service and leadership.

A Memorial Gathering is scheduled for Monday, September 12, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m., at HABEN Funeral Home & Crematory , 8057 Niles Center Rd., Skokie.

To all of those who loaded buses from Old Town and McHenry on Saturday, August 27th and headed to the Wilmette Bowling Center for a night o' fun...
