Give a Gift of Hope

The first day of kayak fishing is like a spark of hope for many of our heroes.  For many of them, the fire of hope has all but been extinguished in a sea of frustration and dismay.

Thank you for caring about Alex, and thousands of other wounded veterans.  They deserve a chance to experience the healing power of kayak fishing.  You are giving them that opportunity.

public charity that relies totally on contributions from individuals,
corporations and foundations.

Double the Donors Initiative

When Alex was wounded, his life changed forever. He did not want to be known for his disabilities. He wanted what we all desire, to be treated with dignity and respect. To be treated like a whole person. Heroes on the Water opened that door for him.

Alex was introduced to HOW by a battle buddy. Reluctantly, he agreed to go kayak fishing for one day.  That day was his first day back to dignity. That day fired him up! For the first time, in a long time, that he was looking forward to doing something positive.

His story is similar to many of our HOW heroes. Most outdoor sports require the use of two good arms and legs.  Not kayak fishing. It is simple. Paddle. Fish. Heal.

Please don't delay. You can help. Together, we can team up and provide positive and life changing kayak fishing trips.

If you have donated before, THANK YOU.  Please continue to give. You are making a huge difference.

You can do one more thing, that will contribute in a big way, and not cost you a penny.

Tell your friends about HOW. Post this story on Facebook, Twitter, etc. Let them know about Alex, and thousands of other veterans, who need our help. If we double our donor team, we can help twice as many veterans recover their sense of dignity and hope. We can help them to be whole again.

And that is what we all want . . . . isn't it?

Restored Confidence
            Meet Alex Minarik

Infantry Paratrooper, Alex Minarik is no stranger to the outdoors. However, after he was injured, most of his time was spent alone, in his barracks room. Matt Griffith, with Heroes on the Water, invited Alex to spend a day on the water, kayak fishing. Alex reluctantly agreed to go. His wife, Katie, was invited to be with him. They both had a good time and Alex's life began to change.

Kayak fishing, and positive outdoor experiences, gradually began to replace countless hours of indoor isolation. HOW made it possible for Alex to enjoy time on the water, with his friends. New, positive memories began to restore his confidence and sense of dignity.

As Alex would later state, "I keep to myself a lot and have a very small group of close friends. I really don't like to be around crowds of people. Thank you for introducing me to something I really enjoy and can share with my wife. HOW has made a huge impact on me."
