Greetings!
As a military veteran and an American Airlines pilot, I somberly remember that tragic day of September 11, 2001 in our Nation's history and am called to honor the innocent men and women who lost their lives and their families who were impacted. That horrific day a decade ago, our Nation was attacked and families were devastated by the unexpected and sudden loss of loved ones. At the time, Americans were uncertain of what was happening, but the painful events quickly revealed the things that are most important in our life and our country. They became crystal clear - faith, family, friends, our fellow Americans and our liberty. Our people showed compassion for others, love for their country and a resilience in the face of tragedy. The true American Spirit erupted and citizens were called to action! As we remember that day and look to pay our respects to those who perished on September 11th, let us also remember those who, each day, are making sacrifices to protect us and ensure our freedom. Some of us may choose to remember the past by focusing solely on the future. Others may feel quiet reflection is the most appropriate remembrance, while still others may seek out public memorial events. Join Heroes on the Water as we honor and extend a sincere "Thank You" to Fire Fighters, Police Officers, First Responders, Members of our United States Armed Forces and American Citizens who put themselves in harm's way. We truly appreciate you and all that you and your families give up for us every day so that we might live in the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave. If you would like to give back and help heal a returning veteran today, click to make a donation. Heroes on the Water provides our kayak fishing program to wounded warriors from all branches of the U.S. Military Service across the country, absolutely free, thanks to donations from people like you and me. Sincerely, |

Maiden Voyage of HOW Louisiana Chapter

A new chapter of Heroes on the Water embarked on its maiden voyage August 27 at Lake Calcasieu, LA. The Louisiana Chapter was formed June 13, 2011, led by Rashid Knight, coordinator, and Brian Conner, assistant coordinator. "This is a terrific program that we're proud to be a part of", said Tim Sander, a spokesman for the Louisiana Chapter. "We're thrilled to have our first trip under our belts and are very excited about what the future of the chapter will bring." Rodney Harris, an Army and Marine Corps veteran, and his son, Tyler Harris, home on leave from Navy basic training, were the focus of the first kayak fishing outing. The men discovered a bounty of fish on Lake Calcasieu as hosts of Knight and Conner who said the day was a rewarding experience. "I never expected administering this program to be so personally touching to me; I found myself not even fishing, but marveling at how much space it created for others to relax and form bonds," said Knight. "We had a father and son team on this trip and when it was over, my owns sons were heavy on my mind - remarkable!" Conner said the trip was an overwhelming success. "Being able to observe the father and son time between two generations of our nation's military was rewarding in a way that is beyond words," said Conner. "I look forward to bringing more and more vets out with HOW and have very high aspirations for our chapter. Rodney spoke highly of his first trip in a kayak. "I would have to say the highlight of my fishing trip would have to be when I caught the redfish and it was able to spin my kayak around and then pull me forward. I never imagined that a fish would be able to do this. It makes catching a fish so much more exciting." John Williams, a very well-known local and owner of Pack and Paddle in Lafayette, LA, also attended the outing and served as a guide for the fishing trip. Heroes on the Water Highlights
Healing Wounded Spirits...Restoring Warriors Hearts.. .simply through kayak fishing.Quotes... "I would very much like to send my warmest thanks and regards to you all. I in the last two weeks have been given a chance to go both freash water and salt water kayaking for the first time. It gave me a chance to not just relax but have a moment of peace that I have not felt in a very long time. It was as if I found something that I had been looking for my whole life. God Bless you all." Will H., Purple Heart soldier "Great! What a good thing HOW does, really. Its one of those real hands-on down to earth simple programs that actually is doing good rather than some sit around and talk thing." Kaylin B., kayak fisherman Pictures... "I am Ollie's wife and I cannot thank you enough for the support you have shown my husband and family. There are so many things to heal after he was injured so badly. The doctors are doing well with his legs but HOW--and a host of others--have helped him heal his heart and mind....These things really have made a difference in his emotional wellbeing. He was completely different when he came off the water that day--he finally realized that he is going to be able to do whatever he wants to do in life even though it is going to be a little bit different. HUGE progress in just a few hours of being on the water." Megan H. (picture below of her husband, Ollie, who was severely injured on April 13, 2011) | "Triumph looks a lot like this. Do what you love no matter what kind of obstacles stand in your way." Megan, Ollie's wife.

Texas Music Throwdown
Proceeds Benefit Heroes on the Water
Come on out and and bring the family! The Texas Music Throwdown ("TMT") is an annual benefit concert that supports Heroes on the Water, a 501(c)3, non-profit organization. With the help of local sponsors and volunteers, it is the goal of the Texas Music Throwdown team to raise money for HOW through donations, sponsorships, silent auctions, and the sale of concert tickets. The funding is needed to support the goal of serving 1,000 veterans in 2012. Donations help to purchase equipment and cover the ongoing expenses associated with kayak fishing outings. For under $100 a day, a vet will benefit from the triple therapy of kayak fishing out on the water. See you there!
