EXCITING PROGRESS IN GUILFORD/ALAMANCE COUNTIES

Guilford Seeks Your Input on MST Plan for Newly-Acquired Land
Guilford County is hosting a public meeting on Tuesday, February 16 from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm in the Media Center of Northern High hike in GuilfordSchool at 7101 Spencer Dixon Road, Greensboro to hear your ideas for a stretch of trail to be built between the Greensboro watershed lakes and the Haw River State Park. For more information about the meeting, contact Alex Ashton of Guilford County.  If you're interested in helping to build trail in Guilford, please contact FMST's Executive Director Kate Dixon to learn how to get involved.

New Trail Opens in Alamance County
Future plans show the MST following trails along the Haw River in Alamance County rather than on the backroads hikers walk today. Thanks to impressive work by the
Haw River Partnership, MST routing along the Haw is growing closer and closer.

In late 2009, the Partnership acquired a key easement connecting two tracts of public land. They also completed construction of another mile of trail between two historic mill communities -
Glencoe and Carolina Mill. These two accomplishments will soon lead to completion of the longest stretch of continuous trail on the Haw - 3.5 miles.

Would you be interested in helping to build more trail on the Haw River in Alamance?  FMST's new Alamance volunteer trail crew leader, Megan Squire, is looking for help.  She's planning trail construction workdays to start this spring as well as a class on trail construction techniques to help new volunteers get up to speed.
Contact Megan to learn how to get involved.

Stokesdale Town Council Votes to Support the Trail
Stokesdale, a rural community in northern Guilford County, is enthusiastic about plans for the MST to follow an abandoned railroad line through their downtown. The Town Council voted in November to support the trail and establish a Pathways, Trails and Easements Committee to work for the trail. Read more about the plans for the MST in Stokesdale in the Northwest Observer.  To get involved, contact Pam & Bill Lemmons, our volunteer leaders in Stokesdale.

MOUNTAIN TRAIL CREWS NEED YOUR HELP

The icy, frigid weather earlier this month downed many, many downed trees on the MST in Watauga Countytrees in the mountains, and long stretches of the MST are blocked.  Our volunteer trail crews will need lots of help opening the trails again for hiking.  If you'd like to volunteer, contact Don Walton in the Asheville area, John Lanman in the Boone area, and Jim Hallsey in the Jefferson/Wilkesboro area.
