Happy 2010! This new year was brought in by millions of people making a resolution to take better care of their bodies. Out of all of those people, very few will focus on the largest organ in their body: their skin. Not only does good skin care make us look better, it also helps us feel better (less irritations), and keeps us healthier (barrier against infection & disease). Good skin care is an extremely important part of our plastic surgery practice. If skin is healthy and well cared for, you look better and your surgery results are better.

Stretch Marks
 Q: Is there any type of surgery or procedure that can eliminate or reduce the appearance of stretch marks?
A: Stretch marks result from irreversibly damaged skin from stretching forces (i.e. pregnancy, weight gain- either fat or muscle as in some weight lifters). A "tear" in the deeper layers of the skin called the dermis is usually the culprit. Generally, surgical removal of the stretch marks, through thigh lifts or tummy tucks is the treatment of choice for appropriate areas.
In some cases, lasers can help reduce the appearance of stretch marks if they are red in color. Finally, there are many companies promoting "body shaping technology" which claim to tighten skin and remove stretch marks non-surgically by using radio frequency technology, lasers, etc. No controlled clinical trials to date have demonstrated their efficacy. There are also no creams "clinically proven" to reduce stretch marks. The best thing to do is consult with a board certified Plastic Surgeon for advice.

 Gina came to Accent On Skin in Latham with a wealth of experience in cosmetology, make-up, nails, and beauty consultation. After deciding on a career in esthetics, Gina graduated top of her class from the Christine Valmy International School of Esthetics. Gina spent the next 13 years working in Dermatology and at a Beauty Enhancement Center. Her extensive experience has helped her to become an expert in treating problematic skin issues, such as acne. Gina is constantly impressing patients with her depth of knowledge of products and skin care technology!
In her free time, she can be found performing in various local theater productions. She has performed (and done make-up) for groups such as Schenectady Light Opera Company, Glens Falls Players, Round Lake Theater, and Proctor's Theater.
