In honor of this annual tradition, we are offering our own educational piece: Facial Fillers 101. Fillers are such an immediate and effective form of facial rejuvenation that they are quickly becoming one of the most sought after plastic surgery procedures. With the addition of two new FDA approved fillers, we are able to offer you more choices on your quest for a younger, more relaxed-looking self! Below you will find explanation of some of the most popular fillers. Fillers 101:
Sculptra
Sculptra is one of the newest products on the market for cosmetic use. It received it's FDA approval for cosmetic use in August after being used for years for volume loss in HIV patients.
Sculptra is used when there is a loss of fat beneath the skin, seen as sunken cheeks, and indentations, and hollow eyes and temples.
Sculptra® is composed of poly-L-lactic acid, a synthetic material. Sculptra® is not made from human or animal sources. Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) is a biocompatible (does not harm the body), biodegradable (able to be broken down by the body) material that has been widely used for many years in surgical products.
Sculptra® is injected below the surface of the skin in the area of fat loss. It provides a gradual and significant increase in skin thickness, improving the appearance of folds and sunken areas. The results from Sculptra® are not immediate, but gradual. Our doctor will see you again in a few weeks to decide if additional injections are needed. People with mild fat loss will require fewer treatments than those with severe fat loss.
Sculptra is an ideal choice for those that need a lot of volume. The effects can last two years or longer.

Fillers 101:
Evolence
 Evolence® dermal filler received FDA approval in July of 2008. Evolence is made of a new, advanced collagen. Unlike previous collagen products, Evolence has been naturally cross-linked, so it mimics the 3-dimensional structure of your skin's own collagen. This allows it to integrate and support your skin's own existing collagen network by adding structure, strength, and volume.
Evolence® is recommended for the correction of moderate-to-deep facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds, the ones that appear from your nose to the corners of your mouth ("smile lines").
Evolence® is injected under the skin bringing the sunken skin back to the surface. The fact that the results are instant and there is minimal swelling is what makes Evolence unique. Most other fillers have a more gradual effect and patients may have to come back after a few days to receive additional product. Evolence is so immediate that final effect is seen before you leave the office that day.
Evolence® lasts up to 12 months.

Fillers 101:
Radiesse
Radiesse is used to attack the wrinkles or folds along the sides of the nose and mouth- nasalabial folds, verticle lip lines, corners of the mouth. It is made of calcium-based microspheres suspended in a water-based gel. The injection of this gel helps to bring sunken skin back to the surface.
Due to the fact that it contains calcium, it is ideal for more stubborn wrinkles and folds.
RADIESSE dermal filler has the added quality of continuing to work over time due to the fact that it stimulates your body to produce new collagen around the injection area.
Radiesse typically lasts up to one year.

Juvederm
 JUVÉDERM® is a smooth consistency gel made of hyaluronic acid-a naturally occurring substance in your skin that helps to add volume and hydration.
JUVÉDERM® is used to treat the wrinkles or folds along the sides of nose and mouth- nasolabial folds, vertical upper lip lines, corners of the mouth.
The technique for Juvederm involves injection of the smooth consistency gel under the skin to fill in and smooth the wrinkles and folds, bringing the sunken skin back to the surface. Juvederm is the only filler to use such a smooth consistency gel which helps the results to look more natural. As the gel combines with water in your body, the intended volume occurs.
Juvederm typically lasts up to one year.

So, How is Botox different?
The above products get rid of wrinkles by adding material to fill in the indents or places where volume is lacking. BOTOX® Cosmetic works by reducing the contractions of the muscles that cause those persistent lines. As we age, our frown lines (specifically those between the eyebrows) become more persistent and pronounced. Botox Cosmetic is used in the area between the brows to temporarily relax the muscles that cause this line or indentation. When the muscles are relaxed, the lines sofen and become less visible.
With Botox Cosmetic, improvement can be seen within days and may last up to 4 months, although results may vary.
