Greetings!
With May comes Memorial day and the official start of the summer season!
Also with May comes stronger UV rays and the unofficial start of the sunburn season!

Gone are the days of safely basking in the sun.  Too much sun exposure can lead to skin cancer.  Sun exposure can also make you look older due to it causing wrinkles and brown age spots.  Read the articles below about sun damage and check out specials on sunblock available this month.   Prevention is the key!

There is no better time to come in for an appointment.  While here you can stock up on sunblock for the season with the coupon below!

Skin Care
Sun spots & age spots

Hyperpigmentation appears as light to dark brown spots on the surface of the skin and the cause is simple- sun damage.  Spots can be found anywhere on skin that is exposed to the sun, but mostly on the face and hands.  Sometimes the pigmentation is more severe and other times it appears like freckles.  Either way raises concerns for our skin care clients who are looking to have an even skin tone and vibrant complexion.
There is good news in fighting the fight against pigmentation.  First and foremost, you should use a daily moisturizer with broadspectrum SPF every day regardless of time of year or weather conditions.  Second, when in the sun use extra protection- additional SPF, a hat with a brim and sunglasses (see the ask the doc article on the right!).  Lastly, start a chemical peel program to effectively lighten the brown spots that are already there and help skin restore its youthful appearance.  Our estheticians can educate you on products you can use at home that contain Vitimin A and other skin lightening agents.  Also, investing in a high quality daily antioxidant, like Skin Ceuticals C+E Feurulic which will fight against future sun damage and help reduce existing pigmentation.

Sun Damage

sunblockQ:  Is there a way to reverse skin damage from sunburn?

A:  It's almost beach time!  Are you ready?  We all now know we need our SUN BLOCK to protect our skin from early aging changes, with loss of elasticity and collagen, and of course we want to minimize our risk for skin cancer from exposure to UV radiation from the Sun.  If the children or grandchildren are going along- let's not forget them. They have brand new skin and have an opportunity to have a lifetime of protection if we just teach them the rules.  To be effective many sunscreens should be applied every 2 hours and after excessive sweating, swimming or toweling off. Optimally the SPF {Sun Protection Factor} should be at least 30 SPF.  Sunburns are inexcusable and should never happen to your children!!! And no, you can not take back the damage!  Although the skin will heal, there is a price to pay many years later.

Don't be fooled by some newly released yet unconfirmed data that some ingredients in sunscreens can actually release free radicals and cause cell damage.  The scientific evidence overwhelmingly supports the liberal use of sunscreens to prevent skin cancers, skin damage and wrinkles.

Many sunscreens now contain anti-oxidants such as vitamins C and E. These vitamins stabilize free radicals and minimize additional damage from the chemicals in the Sun Block. Vitamin C or E can be applied early as a separate preparation and can work all day to prevent damage from the roving electrons released by the Sun's energy.

So slip on your hat, and slap on your sunscreen and an antioxidant cream to get the most sun protection this summer!

"My product pick is Jane Iredale, Dream Tint in Light/Medium.  It is the best for getting out of the house quick.  Moisturizer, sunblock and a lightweight foundation all in one easy step.  It gives you nice soft coverage and evens out the skin while hydrating and protecting. Doesn't get any better than this!"
We sound a bit repetitive this month with all our talk about the sun, but that is only because it is SO important for healthy and great looking skin!  Prevention, prevention, prevention!!!
