Luck of the Irish?
Skin types
If you're Lucky enough to be Irish, your Celtic heritage may have left you a bit Unlucky with regard to your skin.
Skin color is determined by the amount and type of melanin we produce. If you are of Northern European ancestry, you produce much less pigment, so sun exposure can be aging and increase the risk of skin cancer. Although too much sun can be bad we have a need to have UV B exposure. Natural sunlight is essential for the production of vitamin D from cholesterol, but too much destroys the essential vitamin folate. Evolution has ensured that we have the necessary genes to adjust our skin color to the amount of sunlight. If the Irish moved south to a new sunnier climate and stayed there for a 1000 years the skin color of the Celts would adapt and be much darker. Then the Irish would have the wonderful skin texture of the Italians. Now, since none of us, and no individual will live long enough to change our personal skin color we need to protect the fabric of our skin. If you have a little Irish in you, like I do, do not despair! In addition to skin protection we can embark on a journey of corrective skin care. Increasingly sophisticated skin care has evolved over the past 2 decades. Our Licensed Medical Estheticians can institute a program tailored to repair the years of damage. In addition our V- Beam laser cannot only treat the unsightly red veins that may have developed with age but the laser can also be used to tighten the skin and lessen fine lines. With the Luck of the Irish and a little skin magic we can put the twinkle and shine back in your skin. ~Dr. Patricia A. Fox |
