Breast Reduction
Q: I am considering breast reduction surgery. Should the fact that my mother died of breast cancer enter into my decision? A: Women seeking breast reduction surgery often suffer from severe neck, back and shoulder pain. Deep shoulder grooves and skin rashes are also common complaints. Breast reduction surgery greatly reduces back pain by reducing the breast size and position. Following breast reduction surgery, women can get back to full activities in 2-4 weeks and after find that exercising and aerobic activity (running, biking, etc.) is much easier. Incidentally, studies have shown that women who undergo breast reduction surgery are statistically at lower risk for developing breast cancer. This certainly can be an advantage, especially in women with a family history of breast cancer. Following surgery, mammograms can continue on a regular basis and are not typically impaired by the surgery.
