 Breast cancer ribbonGreetings!

Cancer treatment side effects

Yellow leafA recent study of cancer patients showed that treatment often has a negative effect on their skin.  79% of those in the study reported skin-related side effects including dryness, redness and itching following chemotherapy and radiation (www.cancercare.org).

The treatment may be necessary, but the discomfort may not have to be.  One of our licensed estheticians can help to set up a skin care routine that will address these issues and relieve some of the discomforts.  There are a number of products available through our offices that are stronger and more effective than those that can be found in the local drugstore.  Give us a call at either location for a skin care consultation:

Latham Office: 220-9400
Schenectady Office:  370-5046

Ask the Doc
Breast Reduction
red leaf

Q:
I am considering breast reduction surgery. Should the fact that my mother died of breast cancer enter into my decision?

A:  Women seeking breast reduction surgery often suffer from severe neck, back and shoulder pain.  Deep shoulder grooves and skin rashes are also common complaints.  Breast reduction surgery greatly reduces back pain by reducing the breast size and position.  Following breast reduction surgery, women can get back to full activities in 2-4 weeks and after find that exercising and aerobic activity (running, biking, etc.) is much easier.

Incidentally, studies have shown that women who undergo breast reduction surgery are statistically at lower risk for developing breast cancer.  This certainly can be an advantage, especially in women with a family history of breast cancer.  Following surgery, mammograms can continue on a regular basis and are not typically impaired by the surgery.
