This past weekend, September 26 - 28, 2008, Homestead Karting hosted the Easykart Grand Nationals. Easykart drivers from North America, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean converged on Homestead Karting in hopes of securing the title of National Champion and a trip Italy for the Easykart World Finals.
Saturday began under cloudy skies, and the threat of rain. Each class received two qualifying sessions, and with the ever-shifting skies, track conditions were far from favorable. The majority of qualifying was run under wet conditions, often a variable that levels the playing field. At the end of the day the grids were set based on fastest lap. In Easykart 60cc it was Patricio O'Ward in 1st, Collin Warren 2nd, Devlin DeFrancesco 3rd. In Easykart 100cc Alex Karabourniotis took pole position, with Eric Filgeuiras in 2nd, and Lucas Manning Rego placing 3rd. In Easykart 125cc Light Juan Sebastian Arenas took home pole position, 2nd was Juan Valderama, with James Shahan rounding out the top three. In Easykart 125cc Heavy, Phil Curtis took the pole position, with Tim Ulmen in 2nd, and Albert Naon Jr. coming in 3rd.
After an intense weekend of racing, Sunday came to a close and champions were declared. In Easykart 60cc it was Devlin DeFrancesco in 3rd, Mauricio Baiz in 2nd, and Bobby Stevens in 1st.
In Easykart 100cc Gage Ferguson had an impressive finish, starting from last in a 16 kart field and finishing 3rd. Your 2nd place finisher was Eric Filgueiras. Eric was nursing a rib injury from earlier in the weekend but still managed to tough it out and make it to the podium. It was Alex Karabourniotis who took home the big win with a first place finish.
Easykart 125cc Light made for an exciting Final race. Dane Ierna had a strong charge from 11th to 1st. After a hard fought battle, it was Juan Valderama in 3rd, Juan Sebastian Arenas in 2nd, and Dane Ierna in 1st. After the race was over a few disqualifications were assessed and the final order was Dane Ierna in 1st, Dominic Scheer in 2nd, and Alex Quinones in 3rd.
In Easykart 125cc Heavy race, Phil Curtis ran up front for most of the Final, but it was Albert Naon Jr. with a pass for the win a few laps from the end. Phil Curtis ended up 2nd and Claudio Rodriguez rounded out the top three.
Another year of Easykart racing is in the books. Congratulations to all drivers who won the trip to Italy and will be representing America at the Easykart World Finals. I'd like to wish all of our Easykart competitors good luck over the next year racing, as for now we can all "Take it Easy!"
