Social Skills Groups!

buddies

The Autism Society-Dayton Chapter is collaborating with South Community Behavioral Health to bring two different social groups to our community.

One for individuals age 11-17 on the lower-functioning end of the spectrum.

And one for individuals age 11-17 on the higher-functioning end of the spectrum.

Groups will meet one hour per week for 8 weeks to participate in group outings, activities, and organized events.  A curriculum has been developed to increase social skills and build friendships.  Three 8-week sessions are being planned.

Disconnected Kids

Disconnected Kids is a book by Dr. Robert Melillo, Creator and Founder of the Brain Balance Centers.  The book is available for purchase at Amazon.com and local bookstores nationwide.

Brain Balance Achievement Centers offer the Brain Balance Program ® in 29 nationwide locations. The Brain Balance Program® is an individualized and comprehensive approach to helping children with neurobehavioral and learning difficulties surmount their unique challenges. This proprietary, non-medical program has been successful in helping hundreds of children reach their physical, social/behavioral health and academic potential. We work with children who suffer with ADD/ADHD, Dyslexia, Tourette's, Asperger's and Autism Spectrum Disorders.   Our nearest Brain Balance Achievement Center is in Cincinnati, OH.

Interactive Metronome

IM is an assessment and treatment tool used in therapy to improve the neurological processes of motor planning, sequencing and processing. It is successfully being used by:

  • Occupational Therapists
  • Speech Language Pathologists
  • Physical Therapists
  • Educators
  • Athletic Trainers
  • Licensed Rehabilitation Medical and Mental Health Professionals
  • Neurologists, Psychiatrists and Psychologists
  • Chiropractic Care Professionals
  • Developmental/Behavioral Optometrists
  • Music Therapist

The IM program provides a structured, goal-oriented process that challenges the patient to synchronize a range of hand and foot exercises to a precise computer-generated reference tone heard through headphones. The patient attempts to match the rhythmic beat with repetitive motor actions. A patented auditory-visual guidance system provides immediate feedback measured in milliseconds, and a score is provided.

Over the course of the treatment, patients learn to:

  • Focus and attend for longer periods of time
  • Increase physical endurance and stamina
  • Filter out internal and external distractions
  • Improve ability to monitor mental and physical actions as they are occurring
  • Progressively improve coordinated performance.

Such patients include:

  • Sensory Integration Disorder
  • ADD/ADHD
  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
  • Cerebral Vascular Accident (CVA)
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Non-verbal Learning Disorder
  • Balance Disorders
  • Limb Amputation
  • Parkinson's Disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Autism Community Blog

Dear Friends-
My daughter was diagnosed with severe autism in 2003 and our world was turned upside down.
I started to write a book chronicling my struggles as a father and caregiver for my little girl.  I have completed 35 chapters and realized that selling my book for profit is not what is important. What is important is that my message reaches people in need; other parents, educators, legislators and service providers. I have decided to put my book on line for all to see, free of course. Two months ago, I started a blog;http://theautismprojectsiliconvalley.blogspot.com/. The blog is about autism, the medical community, public education, parenting and the challenges facing our children and families. So far I have about half of my book on line and I plan to add a chapter or two each month.
My greatest hope is that the information will help someone in need and that other people recognize that they are not alone in their concerns about the future of their children.
I want this blog to go viral! Anything you can do to help would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Brian Miller

autism ribbonAbout the Autism Society of America:
The Autism Society, the nation's leading grassroots autism organization, exists to improve the lives of all affected by autism. We do this by increasing public awareness about the day-to-day issues faced by people on the spectrum, advocating for appropriate services for individuals across the lifespan, and providing the latest information regarding treatment, education, research and advocacy.
Founded in 1965 by Dr. Bernard Rimland, Dr. Ruth Sullivan and many other parents of children with autism, the Autism Society is the leading source of trusted and reliable information about autism. Through its strong chapter network, the Autism Society has spearheaded numerous pieces of state and local legislation, including the 2006 Combating Autism Act, the first federal autism-specific law. The Autism Society's website is one of the most visited websites on autism in the world and its quarterly journal, Autism Advocate, has a broad national readership. The Autism Society also hosts the most comprehensive national conference on autism, attended by 2000 people each year. Our information and referral team, our program staff, and our strong chapter presence serve thousands of families each year who are searching for help in their journey with autism.  Read on...
