Merry Christmas

December 2008 News
Greetings!
We hope your Thanksgiving was blessed and your holiday preparations are going smoothly.
We were blessed with the opportunity to provide a Thanksgiving turkey and Meijers gift card to 10 families living with autism, and in need, in the greater Dayton area last month.  What a gift to see how very grateful they were for the assistance.
We have approx. 12 families we will be assisting in December.  If you work for a company that would like to help, or if you, yourself, would like to help us shop and deliver, please contact us ASAP.
Though we have reached our limit for accepting families for the Adopt-a-Family program this year, if you are a familiy living with autism or know someone who is, and in need of assistance, please contact us and we will direct you in getting the help you need.
No child should go without, especially at the holidays.  Make this holiday one to remember by donating your time or resources to help another.  It's there you will find the true meaning of Christmas.
God bless you and yours.

The Autism Society of America-Dayton Chapter has asked Paul Nidich, Esq. to present a workshop on Special Needs Financial Planning.  The thought of what will happen to our children when we're gone keeps us all up at night.  But with smart financial planning, we can sleep a little easier.  There's no better time than the present, and hopefully come the first of the year, you'll have peace of mind that the financial aspect is taken care of.  We did it, and you can, too.

WHEN:  Thursday, December 18, 6:30 PM
WHERE:  The Miami Valley Regional Center (SERRC), 4801 Springfield Street, Riiverside, OH 45431
COST:  FREE

Refreshments will be served.  Sorry, we cannot accomodate children.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKER:  Paul Nidich is an Attorney-at-Law who has a child with autism.  So he knows our fears, concerns, and financial constraints.  More about Paul...
Magical Season of Giving-Communal Artwork needs your help!

On Saturday, December 13th from 12:00-5:00 PM, professional artists from the K12 Gallery will create a communal piece of artwork entitled "The Missing Piece May Be YOU!" at the Dayton Mall as part of their Magical Season of Giving.  Shoppers will be invited to help create this masterpiece!  Please take a moment from your holiday shopping to make some memories with your kids as you help with the artwork.

A very special time with Santa was enjoyed by families living with autism on Sunday, Nov. 23rd.  More than 40 families took advantage of this quiet time with a Sensitive Santa before the stores opened.  Many grateful parents looked on as their son or daughter had their first successful visit with the jolly elf.  Thanks to the generosity of the Dayton Mall, each family received a free 4 X 6 photograph to remember the moment.  We hope to continue this tradition each year through our new partnership with the Dayton Mall.  Photos taken at this event are available to view on our website.

And while you're out at the Dayton Mall, be sure to visit the food court and view the bright yellow mural on the wall entitled "A child with autism is like a snowflake...each one unique and each one beautiful!".  There, you'll find some of the faces from our "Faces of Autism" page on our website.

And finally, take a moment to view the monitors as you walk from store to store.  A video created by WDTN's Mom to Mom and the Dayton Mall is on continuous loop creating awareness about autism.

We want to thank WDTN and the Dayton Mall for their hard work, creativity, and sensitivity as they put together the events, videos, television spots, and more for the Magical Season of Giving.  They have been a real pleasure to work with and we look forward to working with them on additional projects in the future.

A call for artwork!

Registration will begin in January for the second annual ASA-Dayton Walk for Autism and Information Expo.  Start getting your teams together now!

The Walk will be held at the same location as last year, Payne Recreation Center, Moraine, OH, only bigger and better!  We have taken your suggestions and made changes we think you'll be very impressed with.

We are again looking for sponsors, and vendors of autism-related goods.  If you or your company falls into either of those categories, be sure to watch our website in January for the necessary forms to get you started.

We are also looking for artwork by a person on the spectrum for our shirt.  You can submit artwork for consideration by mailing a copy, along with the artist's name and age, to:  P.O. Box 1013, Miamisburg, OH 45343.  Keep the original in a safe place!  Artwork must be received by Feb. 1, 2009 for consideration.  All artwork received becomes the property of the ASA-Dayton Chapter.  We will be looking for artwork that we can build a slogan around.  If you have any suggestions, be sure and submit them with the copy of the artwork.  This is a nice way to fill those long, cold afternoons!

Adopt-a-Family project serves ten families on Thanksgiving.

The Autism Society of America-Dayton Chapter was pleased to have been a part of making Thanksgiving a little brighter for ten area families affected by autism.  Each family received a turkey, along with a gift card to Meijers to complete their meals.  A generous donation from Best Buy made it possible for us to help so many.

We will also be helping an additional 12 families in December and have already received a donation from Target to get us started.  If you or your company would like to help, please contact our Adopt-a-Family Chairperson Shelli Mendel-Koeppl at kepszoo@sbcglobal.net.

Though we have reached our limit for accepting families this year, please contact us if you have a family member with autism and are in need.  We have a list of resources that may be of assistance.
