September 15    Bags tournament at Schwiebert Park

The Opening Act

September 4 marked the occasion for another joint Kiwanis/Rotary meeting.  This time, Rotary served as hosts.

President Tom Ketelaar was introduced by Rotary President, Frank Lambert, and extended his welcome to the combined assembly.  Tom made several remarks and announcements.

First, he extended his thanks to those Club members who attended the Rock Island City Council meeting last week, at which time, the Club was named as Organization of the Year, and Bud Helpenstell was named Person of the Year of the City of Rock Island.

Another big thank-you was extended to the Club members, families and friends who walked and rode in the Labor Day parade Monday, with special thanks extended to Dale Grabau and the Fislars for automobile procurement.

We were also informed that on September 18, there will be a kickoff for the satellite club which our Club will be starting.

John Califf gave an announcement concerning the Mega-Club meeting to be held at the Davenport Outing Club on September 20 at noon.  This will be a gathering of members of a number of clubs in the vicinity.

We were also reminded of the annual bags tournament to be held September 15 at Schwiebert Park.  For the benefit of our Rotary friends, we were reminded that the event will feature 128 teams, as well as music, games, food and beverages.

The Feature Attraction

The program was given by Superintendent of Schools for Rock Island/Milan District No. 41, Mike Oberhaus.  Mike assisted his verbal presentation with slides, as well as his own version of "Jeopardy".  Mike explained how the District is attempting to achieve its goal of excellence every day and the open solicitation to community leaders to participate in establishing a graduate profile for a student who graduates from the District.  These would include those who would be able to master and apply course skills, communicate effectively, think critically and problem solve, exhibit strong personal qualities, interact productively in teams, and use technology as a tool for learning.  Mike also briefly addressed the scorecard utilized by the District for the purpose of measuring how successful the District is in achieving its mission.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
