The Opening Act

Club President Tom Ketalaar called the meeting of July 30 to order.  To honor the London Olympics, Daryl led the club in a stirring rendition of God Save the Queen.

  • Tom Plechaty once again handed out signup sheets for the upcoming softball tournament at the Alan Campbell softball complex.  Volunteers are still needed.  We will followup with an email next week with the specific slots needed to fill.
  • We welcomed visiting Kiwanians from Kewanee.
  • In Fun & Fellowship, Mike Bell once again prevailed, with Lee Schenck somehow owing the Club $5.
  • Adam Bain again reminded our club members of the upcoming Bags Tournament, and the need for teams.  Please consider participating, or getting your friends, coworkers, or colleagues to take part.

The Feature Attraction

Jennifer, head of the Cath Lab at Trinity Heart Center, along with Dr. Dan Sastowski, spoke about the new radial artery catherization procedure now being used at Trinity.  This procedure allows them to perform angioplasty and insert stents by entering through the wrist, instead of the groin.  This allows for much faster recovery for the patient.  They showed samples of the devices and stents used in this procedure, and answered many questions from the group.

Upcoming Programs

August 6th    Bent River Brewery (sorry, no samples expected to be served)

THOUGHT(s) FOR THE DAY

We have received no Hixson Award Nominations this year.  The Hixson Award is one of the highest honors that can be bestowed on a Kiwanian.  It recognizes club members who have gone above and beyond in their service to Kiwanis and the community.  There are no specific nomination forms, but a simple letter addressed to the Board can be submitted by one or more Kiwanians with why you feel your fellow club member is worthy of recognition.  A $1000 grant is made in their name to Kiwanis International, and the recipient gets to ride in the Labor Day Parade and be recognized by the community.  If you would like to submit a member, please do so by Monday, September 13th.

The 4th Annual Kiwanis Pepsi Bags Tournament is fast approaching, and we truly need your help.  This is BY FAR our biggest fundraiser of the year.  Without the success of this tournament, we simply cannot fulfill many of our grant requests throughout the year.  Besides volunteers, WE NEED TEAMS!  Do not take this for granted.  If you are a sponsor, please provide a team, whether it's you and a guest, coworkers, employees, family or friends.  If you are not a sponsor, spread the word to those same people.  Let's not take the success of this event for granted.  Our goal is 128 teams, and we need your help to get there!  The website has all the details needed to register!
