The Opening Act

Club President Tom Ketalaar called the meeting of July 23 to order.  Providing the entertainment again was Jonathan Turner and his Kiwanis Bix Sprint Team.

  • Tom Plechaty lead off the announcements with the lineups for the softball tournament.  Friday is pretty well covered with openings to work the gate on Saturday and the beer tent, believe it or not, Sunday.  Give Tom a call or sign up next week if you can help.  Rumor has it that the temperature forecast is for only double digits.
  • Guests included representatives of the Davenport Club, probably still trying to find their way home after the Tom and Jerry party a few months ago.
  • John Califf reported that The Kewanee interclub was a lot of fun.  There will be no interclub trips in August, but if you'd like to just ride around with John for the heck of it, I'm sure he wouldn't mind.  September's interclub trip will involve the ceremonial presentation of the traveling gavel to the Aledo club.
  • Daryl reported that the community came through with around $1200 in donations for peanuts.  Great work Daryl and all who participated.  Chris Elsberg reported on the First Day Fund and shared that we're pretty well set for this year although there will be a need for volunteer help at the Moline Wal-Mart July 28 in the morning.  Contact Chris for further details.  Congratulations to Chris and the rest of her team on this project.
  • Lieutenant Governor Mark Petersen reported to the club that the first annual Russ Scott golf tourney will be held August 29.  Contact Mark for further details.
  • We were all pleased to learn from Bob that his wife was now home and convalescing and thankful, along with Bob, for all the prayers and support.
  • Being probably the highest acclaimed athlete in the club, Dick Timmer informed us that he would again be competing in the international horseshoe pitching competition and hoping to bring home more championship hardware than the Cubs over the last century.
  • Adam Bain thanked all who had helped on the Bag Building Boosters and Builders.
  • In fun and fellowship, Dick Timmer won the preliminary prize while Bob Wakefield stood up for the Kartel and managed to lose the championship game.

The Feature Attraction

The program was given by Ed Hanna of the Quad Cities Alliance for Immigrants and Refugees.  Ed began with some background on the organization and its development through Neighborhood Partners, what the organization does and how it started.  This task force was developed as a response to the immigration wave the area is experiencing.  Ed noted that fully thirty different languages and dialects are spoken in the Rock island/Milan school district.  His organization has operated through study circles inviting members of the community and immigrant families to dialogue on the many issues involved in this setting.
