The Opening Act

Club President, Tom Ketelaar, called the meeting of July 9 to order.  Once again, we were delighted to have Jonathan Turner and his Classic Deere Orchestra providing the entertainment.

John Califf started with the first announcement concerning the Interclub to Kewanee July 18.  He also informed us that the Grant Committee would be meeting on July 23 after the Club meeting, so if you know of anyone who might be interested in submitting a grant request to the Club, contact a Club officer for the appropriate procedure.

Joe Robb filled in for Tom Plechaty concerning the softball tournament, and we were informed that there are a number of openings on Saturday and a few available on Sunday for the tournament, which will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 10, 11 and 12.

Dale Grabau informed us that Bob VanDeVoorde's wife is now home but her condition still requires care and attention.

Liz Loveless stepped in concerning the First Day activities.  On July 12, the committee could dearly use help at the old Lincoln School for sorting school supplies between the hours of 1:00 - 7:00.  If the work can't get done Thursday, the committee will also be meeting on Friday at 10:00 a.m. to finish up.  If you wouldn't be able to work during these hours but have a few extra bucks stashed away for charitable purposes, this would be a good one.

Daryl Empen still needs volunteers for Peanut Days July 13 and 14.  These will be relatively short days and workers will be reporting to the Hy-Vee and Walgreen's stores on 18th Avenue in Rock Island.

In the Birdies for Charity drive, Gene Smith was in pretty good spirits considering the attention that this program has achieved.  Looking at current predictions, it looks like there should be a pretty good collection this year.

The last regular meeting of the Bags Construction Committee will be held this Thursday night, July 12.  If you know of anyone, particularly father and son combinations or college students who might be interested, please encourage them to register.  Early registration will be accepted through July 16.

In Fun and Fellowship, Marty Katz managed to win the preliminary prize.  In the grand prize drawing, Jud Briggs won the opportunity to once again lose to our lovely and talented Mike Bell.

The Feature Attraction

The program was given by Mr. Garrett Burchett from the Mississippi River Distilling Co.  Garrett gave a brief background to the start-up of this relatively new QC business and passed on to us a few interesting facts in how changes in Iowa law have facilitated the greater accessibility of the distillery.  One interesting fact he passed on was that Iowa is one of the top alcohol-producing states, particularly vodka.  The Company's policy is to seek out all and as many components of the process locally as possible.  This includes all of its grains which are grown within a few miles of LeClaire.  Doors are open seven days a week, and the Company website is entertaining and instructive.

Upcoming Programs

July 16                  Bob Fox, Mississippi Valley Fair

July 23                  Ed Hanna, QC Alliance for Immigrants & Refugees
