The Opening Act

Bear with me, as our usual fine editor Bill Cleaver, was absent this week.  So you are stuck with Daryl for this week's newsletter (from memory, since i forgot to take notes).

President Tom opened the meeting at 12:15 as usual.  He welcomed the 49 members and guests present.  After the opening song, pledge of allegiance, Kiwanis pledge, and invocation, Daryl led the crowd in a rousing song (of course I forget what it was now).

In a new twist on Fun and fellowship, suggested by a member of the Kartel itself, the Club actually made money.  Fun & Fellowship Chair Mike Bell had four Aces up his sleeve.  One Ce would win the Kartel 1/2 the pot, one the entire pot, and one nothing.  But if the Ace of Spades was selected, the player must pay the Club $5.  The Kartel was selected, and sure enough, the Ace of Spades was selected by our guest speaker. Jud Briggs graciously turned over $5 to the Club!

The Feature Attraction

The club welcomed Zobeida Laufenberg from the East Moline/Silvis Kiwanis Club and her niece, who gave a presentation on the Project Eliminate.  Project Eliminate is Kiwanis International's current major emphasis project, with the goal to eliminate Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus around the World.  Tetanus is spread from a virus contained in the soil, that can be spread through an open wound or cut.  The goal is to raise $110 million to help eliminate maternal/neonatal tetanus, which affects nearly 129 million mothers and their future babies in 39 countries.

Every Club is encouraged to contribute to this cause.  There is information on the Kiwanis.org website about this disease, the project, and much much more.
