The Opening Act

President Tom Ketelaar called the meeting of June 11 to order.  Providing entertainment again was Jonathan Turner with his Greased Lightning Singers.

The first announcement concerned a noon lunch June 20 with a new group, Quad Cities Young Professionals, at Huckleberry's.  Those of you who are interested, think about wandering over for a dandy calzone and a chance to get a handle on what this vibrant group is up to.

A sign-up sheet is now circulating for working the Kiwanis hole at the John Deere Classic.  Sign up soon, since these slots are sure to go in a hurry.

President Tom again reminded us of QC Baseball Night this coming Sunday.  If the weather is good, it's a delightful and inexpensive way to spend a few hours.

We received the last pitch for the rolle bolle Interclub in Atkinson this Wednesday.  Come on out, enjoy some pork, and watch some of our Club's own magicians with the area's finest bolle rollers.

The bags tournament committee is up and running.  If you're interested, and you should be, contact Adam Bain.

Gene Smith managed to find his way back into this country and gave us the last gentle reminder for signing up for Birdies.  Remember, he knows where you live, so you might as well give in peaceably.

We were delighted to see Milt Hedquist at the meeting, who was recognized for his 95th birthday.  Milt will be holding an open house at Friendship Manor, so check your paper or, preferably, with Milt to get the details.

Jeff Behrens moved the agenda along by introducing Secretary Mike Bell for the weekly Fun and Fellow . . . stuff portion of the meeting.  The Kartel won the preliminary prize, and Gene Smith not only won the opportunity to go for the grand prize but won the prize as well.  In his typical spirited fashion, his winnings were donated to Birdies for Charity.

The Feature Attraction

The program consisted of a number of information items from President Tom.  A number of Club members were recognized as Legion of Honor recipients, Liz Loveless and Rod Jennings for 25 years, Gary Camp and Mike Swartz for 30 years, Steve Pressly and Jim Standaert for 35 years, Dale Blocklinger for 40 years, Pryce Boeye for 45 years, and Jerry Phelps for 50 years.

Tom next discussed the end-year national convention in New Orleans at the end of the month for which Tom and John Califf will be representing the Club.  A hot topic is the increase in international dues in an amount of $15 per member per year.  Apparently, the International Board has already approved this increase, and what was left was for individual Clubs to determine how the funds would be accumulated for this purpose.  After a spirited and informative discussion, it was determined that this cost would be passed on to Club members.

Tom wrapped up the meeting by discussing the activities in which the Club would have to engage to become a Distinguished Club.  There's going to have to be some fast and fancy footwork between now and the end of September, but meeting attendees enthusiastically supported this, so our very vibrant, enthusiastic Board will be putting their finishing touches on a plan.
