President Tom called the meeting of June 4 to order. Providing entertainment, as always, was Jonathan Turner and his Soggy Bottom Boys.
To get the attendees in a jubilant spirit, Lee Schenck served as song leader, with a selection from Songs of Kiwanis, that compendium of favorites from the days of the Coolidge administration.
President Tom reminded us of the June 17 QC Kiwanis Night at the Ball Park, and past President, Craig Knobloch, gently reminded President Tom of the name of the park.
Lieutenant Governor, Mark Peterson, gave us the rundown on working at the John Deere Classic. Workers will be needed from Wednesday through Sunday, with the Wednesday session running longest, Thursday and Friday a bit shorter, and the weekend a bit shorter yet. The Kiwanis "K" will be proudly displayed at hole No. 4 again. Contact any Club officer if you'd be interested in joining the group.
President Tom also reminded us of the upcoming Bags Olympics and that if you're interested, you're encouraged to contact Adam Bain directly.
In Fun and Fellowship, Tom Smith won the preliminary prize, which he graciously donated back to the Club. The Kartel won the opportunity to go for the grand prize and, unfortunately for the Kartel, Bob Wakefield had no more luck against Jeff Behrens than he's had against Mike Bell.
The next highlight of the meeting was the distribution of grants. Recipients and amounts included the Child Abuse Council with $500, Chordbusters with $250, Churches United with $500, the Rock Island Center for Math and Science with $500, Rock Island Girls Softball League with $300, Spring Forward Learning Center with $500, and WVIK with $250. Representatives from all of these groups were in attendance and shared a few words on the programs being supported with the grants.
