Upcoming Events/Fundraisers/Dates

The Opening Act

The meeting of May 14 was conducted by the Key Club of Rock Island High School.  Entertainment was again provided by Jonathan Turner, this time, along with the Rocky Top Singers.

The President of the Club introduced the various officers and then introduced our own Club President, Tom Ketelaar, for his announcements.

Tom began by informing us of the next Interclub this coming Thursday in Kewanee for a noon luncheon.

Tom also spoke for Adam Bain and the upcoming fourth annual Bags Tournament.  Apparently, Adam has created a new Facebook page for the event.

Tom also reminded us of the June 17 Quad Cities Kiwanis Night at Modern Woodmen Park.

Guests included members of the Jordan Builders Club, as well as a number of Rock Island High School Key Club members.

In the Happy/Sad Dollars phase of the meeting, we were given a report on Daryl Townsend, who has pneumonia.  Dale Grabau observed that the doctors probably told Daryl not to watch any Cubs games until he achieves full strength.

In Fun and Fellowship, Steve Andich won the preliminary prize, which he graciously donated back to the Club.  Bob Tapprich won the opportunity to go for the grand prize, which he was able to wrest from the grip of Mike Bell, but he contributed his winnings to the Jordan Club.

The Feature Attraction

The program started with the various officers of the Club reading selected quotes from historic notables.  They summarized many of the activities in which the school was engaged during the past year, as well as community activities.  They also set out some of their goals for activities for the coming year.  One major project will be a program geared toward focusing on the challenges of the expanding refugee population in Rock Island, particularly, as that impacts on the schools.  One of the officers is a recipient of the Thoms Family Scholarship, and she described how the project in which she engaged which resulted in her receiving this honor would be melded into a project of the Club.  Another ambitious project which was discussed concerned a possible project assisting in providing housing assistance in Appalachia.

Upcoming Programs

May 21      Annual Electrion of Officers

May 29      Joint Meeting with Rotary (speaker TBA)
