The Opening Act

President Tom Ketalaar called the January 23 meeting to order.  Entertainment was again provided by Jonathan Turner and his Chinese New Year Mandolin Orchestra.

President Tom gave us the word we had been waiting for breathlessly, that the club meeting bills were out and being distributed.  No, you can't avoid the bill by not showing up.  Remember, now that the directory is out, Tom knows where you live.

Word was John Califf was in Tasmania setting up an interclub visit  so it was left to President Tom to remind us that the next interclub would be held at the former Illini Hospital January 30 at 6:30 to break bread with the East Moline/Silvis club.

Also on January 30 the grants committee will meet immediately after the meeting, assuming John's passport lets him back into the country.

On each table at the meeting there was a summary of Pancake Day festivities being arranged by local Kiwanis clubs just in case you have a hankering' for maple syrup on something.

In the membership committee race for the K it was announced that in the primaries, the Chris Elsberg team was way ahead.

President Tom again reminded us that a corrected, new and improved club directory would be made available for those who have noticed that as much as we all like John Gifford, Jeff Glass and Dale Grabau, it wasn't necessary to put their stats in the directory twice.

Dick Fislar reminded those attending the Circa '21 night January 25 and was so excited about the event he promised an open bar.

The invocation and song leader list is still being circulated because we still need people to sign up.  If you've ever wanted to say grace before the meal or had aspirations of leading the club membership in some of the favorite songs of the Coolidge era, here's your chance.

Guests included members of the Rock island High School  Key Club, escorted by the school principal, Tim Wernentin.

In Fun and Fellowship, the preliminary prize went to the Kartel.  Mike Swartz won the opportunity to go for the Grand Prize which he managed to wrest away from Mike Bell.

In the Sad category of the Happy/Sad dollar portion of the meeting we learned that past president, loyal member and great friend, Alicia Shuman will soon be leaving the area for the more pleasant climate of Georgia.  Alicia, you will be sorely missed, but we wish you good health, happiness and more good Kiwanis times down south.  Go Dawgs!

The Feature Attraction

The program was given by Mike Woods of Casa Guanajuato.  He gave a brief background of himself as well as a brief history of the development of this organization.  Currently, Casa is operating under a grant from the state of Illinois.  The mission of the group is to integrate the immigrant population of the area into the community, particularly the population of the Hispanic community.  Mike focused on his theme that real change and improvement can be effected by investing in human capital, developing strength through education, advocacy and empowerment.
