The first meeting under the new regime was called to order on Monday, October 3, with Club President, Tom Ketelaar, presiding. Jonathan Turner once again provided entertainment along with his Kiwanis Goodtime Band.
Tom provided a number of the announcements. First, he reminded us that Dining Tour books are still available at the low cost of only $35 apiece. He added that it is anticipated there will be another joint Circa party with Rotary which will almost pay the cost of the book alone.
Tom also made reference to the Rock Island High School Key Club project on its walk to eliminate tetanus.
John Califf noted that the Kewanee Interclub was another fun event which featured the installation of that club's officers. Try to make at least one Interclub this year.
John also made reference to the Martin Luther King tutoring project which would involve Club members assisting in a reading program at that center. It is anticipated to involve four teams of five members each, with participation Wednesdays and Thursdays at around 4:30 p.m. It would only be necessary for one team member at a time to be in attendance per session.
John concluded his remarks by stating that a number of grant applications will be reviewed and considered by the committee and submitted to the Board for its consideration.
Guests included members of the Rock Island High School and Alleman High School Key Clubs.
Liz Loveless thanked all those who assisted and participated in the NAMI Walk, which resulted in a generation of $670 from the Club for this very worthwhile project.
Adam Bain provided an almost-final recap on the bags tournament. 100 teams participated. The event was assisted by four returning major sponsors. Adam thanked the 33 members and friends who assisted in all of the various phases of the project, including the various subcommittee chairs. Adam would estimate that the return to the Club will be approximately $7,500.
In Fun and Fellowship, the Kartel won the preliminary prize and elected to take the $7 price to help offset the $10 spent in obtaining it. Steve Andich won the opportunity to go for the grand prize, which he managed to win. Hopefully, this doesn't set a precedent for the year.
Mike Bell gave some preliminary results on the peanut project and noted that even these preliminary figures resulted in a financial success beyond his committee's projections.
