Volume 90 No 44                   August 29, 2011
Upcoming Events/Fundraisers/Dates

The Opening Act

President Craig Knobloch called the meeting of August 29 to order. Entertainment was again provided by Jonathan Turner's musical talents. President Craig once again exercised his always-wise decision making and decided to forego his song leading for the day.

For those who will be joining the Labor Day parade, Club members will be gathering around 8:45 on Labor Day at the American Bank & Trust Company parking lot on 18th Avenue in Rock Island.

As a reminder, there will be no Club meeting next Monday, September 5. Rather, we'll have a joint meeting with Rotary on Tuesday, September 6. The featured speaker will be Rock Island/Milan School District No. 41 Superintendent, Dr. Michael Oberhaus, who will present the annual State of the Schools address.

On September 12, we'll go back onto the Monday meeting schedule and will gather at the Martin Luther King Center.

Installation night for Club officers and board members will be at 6:30 p.m. September 29 at the River House in Moline. In this regard, please remember that we are currently operating with two board openings, so if you have an interest in participating in Club goal-setting and planning, please give your name to one of our Club officers.

Chris Elsberg reminded us that the bags tournament committee still needs volunteers for this event September 17. With this only being the third tournament, the event has already gained significant notoriety and acclaim, so consider assisting in what has become a proud Club activity.

Guests included members of the Alleman High School Key Club and an Interclub group from Kewanee.

In Fun and Fellowship, the Kartel won the preliminary prize and enthusiastically took the $5 to help offset the $11 spent in going for the prize. Alicia Shuman won the opportunity to go for the grand prize and she made it, despite Mike Bell's best efforts.

The Feature Attraction

For the program segment of the meeting, we enthusiastically extended our congratulations to the two newest recipients of the Hixson Award, long-time member, Chuck Dyson, and long-time and spirited sponsor for the Alleman High School Key Club, Don Adams. Following the recognition given to these two extremely worthy individuals, awards were presented to East End Neighborhood Fair in the amount of $500, and to NAMI of Scott County in the amount of $250. This was followed by a very classy and well-done visual touting the upcoming bags tournament. Kudos to Adam Bain and the rest of his hardworking crew.
