Upcoming Events/Fundraisers/Dates
Assistance is still needed to help with the beer tent and ticket gate at the Men's Class C Softball Tournament at Alan Campbell Softball Complex the weekend of August 5-7.  Registration sheets will be at the meetings, or email me, daryl@gaselectriccu.com, if you can work a two-hour shift.
The Opening Act

Club President, Craig Knobloch, called the meeting of July 25 to order. Jonathan Turner again handled the entertainment along with his Kiwanis Chattanooga Choo Choo singers.

To begin the meeting, we enjoyed the company of Jessica Barron and Tom Bohnert, the two recipients of the Club's high school scholarship grants. They both extended their thank-yous and brought the Club members up to date on what their future plans were.

Daryl Empen gave us the current tally on the softball tournament and indicated that we still need some help at the gate. Please call Daryl if you can help out.

Alicia Shuman gave us an update on the District Convention and informed the gathering that she still needed some help on Saturday morning. Please contact Alicia if you can help her out.

President Craig reminded us of the District golf outing on August 4, to be held in conjunction with the District Convention which, as we all remember, is the same weekend as the softball tournament. If you can think of any other Club activity we could undertake that same weekend, try it out on Craig.

A reminder was given to the membership that on August 21, we will be having the Quad City Kiwanis Club Night with the Bandits.

President Craig informed us that nominees for the Hixson Award are still being entertained, so if you think of someone whom you feel would be a worthy recipient of this honor, please contact Craig.

We were also informed that the Grant Committee will be meeting again soon and that considerations would be passed on to the Club shortly.

We also received another reminder that on September 12, the meeting will be held at the Martin Luther King Center where Club member, Jerry Jones, will be introducing those of us who have not been there to this beautiful facility.

Second Vice President Jeff informed us of the commencement of the Behrens Bags Board Building Blitz. The first session will be held this Thursday at Jeff's place. If you don't know where he lives, give him a call and I'm sure he'd be glad to help you Google.

In Fun and Fellowship, Dick Timmer again managed to win the preliminary prize, which he once again donated back to the Club. Gene Smith qualified for the grand prize, which he lost on a game devised at the spur of the moment by Mike Bell.

The Feature Attraction

The program was given by Gary Asay. Gary gave an excellent and informative presentation on hog farming. The focus of his presentation was directed toward a well-organized power point presentation.

Gary began by stating that there have been many changes in the past 30 years that he has been a hog farmer. These changes are primarily attributable to the demands of the consumer. Beginning in the late 1970s, there have been pronounced interests in cutting fat in our diets, attention to the green movement, and concern for the welfare of the livestock. In response, Gary presented considerable information on how hogs are much leaner, cared for much more humanely and under circumstances which are as hospitable to the environment as possible. Among the statistics Gary presented were that hogs consume 10 percent of the corn and soybean crops in the State of Illinois.
