Volume 90 No 31              May 16, 2011
Upcoming Events/Fundraisers/Dates
Volunteers are needed  to serve Pancakes on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30th downtown on the Plaza.  Workers needed anywhere from 5 am to 10 am.  Please consider volunteering, and let President Craig know if you can assist.
The Opening Act

President Craig Knobloch called the meeting of May 16 to order.  Entertainment was again provided by Jonathan Turner and the Ides of May Merrymakers.

The first announcement came from Steve Schroder, who reminded everyone of the Interclub in Aledo Thursday, May 19.  This will be a noon meeting, and if you'd like a ride, contact Steve.  Steve also informed us that the next Interclub will be held June 8 in Atkinson with a 6:00 p.m. dinner meeting.  Following the meeting will be the Great Kiwanis Rolle Bolle Challenge.  International rolle bolle rules may require a steroid test, so make sure you come clean.

As a matter of concern to the Club membership, Gene Smith again forgot to bring along his Birdies for Charity brochures.  Gene maintains that he's doing just fine and simply needs to restock so frequently that, sometimes, he can actually be found without a brochure.

President Craig again reminded us of the May 30 pancake fest to be held in conjunction with the Rock Island Criterium.  If you aren't otherwise occupied, this should be another fun occasion.

Guests included members of the Rock Island High School Key Club.

In Fun and Fellowship, the Kartel won the preliminary prize, which it gladly received in the interest of attempting to recoup some of its ongoing debt.  The opportunity to go for the grand prize went to Gene, who missed the grand prize by "just that much".

The Feature Attraction

The program was given by a representative of the Pilot Club.  The featured subject was Project Lifesaver International.  Pilot Club recently celebrated its 65th anniversary.  Project Lifesaver was initiated to address the problems of those who may find themselves wandering, those burdened with Alzheimer's, Downs, and autism.  There are approximately 1200 agencies in 45 states which work in this area, primarily, in law enforcement.  The way the program works is that the subject is provided with a wristband transmitter.  The individuals who may have to conduct a search for the subject then use a handheld device which will home in on where the wristband signal comes from.  The function and involvement of Pilot Club in this is to educate the community of the availability of this program and then conduct fundraisers for the purpose of paying the $300 start-up and $10 recurrent costs.  There are approximately six subjects in Rock Island County.
