Volume 90 No 30             May 2, 2011
Upcoming Events/Fundraisers/Dates
Downtown Rock Island Cleanup this Saturday, May 7th.  Meet at 8:00 am at the parking ramp (corner of 3rd Avenue and 17th Street).  Donuts and coffee are provided, along with gloves and bags.  Please show up to assist if you can, as Kiwanis has a long history of helping with this project!
The Opening Act

President Craig Knobloch called the meeting of May 2 to order.  Providing the entertainment, as always, was Jonathan Turner with his Mayday Emergency Singers.

There were a number of announcements.  First, Queen Emeritus Daphne announced that approximately $4,004 had been collected on Rose Day, which should translate out to a bit over $2,000 coming to the Club.

Gene Smith was back on the bandwagon with his collection of Birdies circulars, so if you don't want the strong-arm approach, jump in on this project while he's still gentle.

Steve Schroder announced that the next Interclub would be at noon on May 19 in Aledo.

President Craig reminded us that Pancake Day Revisited will be held on Memorial Day in conjunction with the Rock Island Criterium.  This will constitute the regular meeting for that date.

Craig also gave us a first-call announcement that the Division 17 golf outing will be held May 20 at Valley View course in Cambridge.

In Fun and Fellowship, Tom Ketelaar filled in for Mike Bell.  The Kartel won the preliminary prize and elected to take the money.  The Kartel also won the opportunity to go for the grand prize and managed to win this as well.  Mike, we need you!

We were all delighted to celebrate with Bud Helpenstell as he celebrated 25 years of membership in the Club with the presentation of the Legion of Honor award to him.  Congratulations Bud!

We were also able to enjoy adding two more members to our fellowship, Moira Vroman and Zach Edwards.

The Feature Attraction

The program was given by Michael Gullion of the Boy Scouts of America.  He began his presentation by pointing out how the Boy Scouts are well known and receive a great deal of exposure.  Purposes of the organization are to build character and integrity.  Recently, the organization celebrated its 100th anniversary.  Mike showed us a number of ways to support this organization through money, individual participation, and personal example.  Precepts of Scouting are exemplified through giving the Scout oath which addresses duty, service, and morality.

Future Attractions

May 9              Alleman Key Club & WVIK's "Radio that Reads"

May 16            Carol Triebel, Pilot Club of Moline

May 23            John Califf, "My Travels in France, Part 2"

May 30            Pancake breakfast at QC Criterium
