KIWANIS NIGHT AT THE MALLARDS
The District will host a Kiwanis Night on Saturday, March 12th.  Tickets will be $12 for lower bowl, and $10 for upper bowl, and will include a hot dog and small drink.  Contact Alicia Shuman if you wish to attend (alicia@netexpress.net)
The Opening Act

The regular meeting of February 14 was called to order by Club President, Craig Knobloch.  As always, Jonathan Turner provided the entertainment, this week with his Valentine's Day OomPah Band.

Our first announcement was a congratulatory one for Alicia Shuman, who will be our Division Lieutenant Governor for the 2012/2013 year.

News from our District meeting included information concerning the Moline Club Pancake Day on February 26, a Kewanee Pancake Day coming up in the near future, a March 6 Pancake Fest in Geneseo, and a possible Kiwanis Night at the Mallards event on March 12.

Liz Loveless gave us updated information concerning the March 27 Bowl-A-Thon in Kewanee.  Wearing our team colors will be none other than past President and Lieutenant Governor, Liz; past President and soon-to-be Lieutenant Governor, Alicia; past President and honorary Club royalty, Queen Daphne; and our current President, Craig Knobloch.  With all that brass, I hope the Club comes up with something.

Our next Interclub will be held February 22 with the Bettendorf Club at The Lodge for a noon luncheon.

Guests included members of the Alleman High School Key Club, as well as State Representative Rich Morland and his wife.

Use It or Luge It will be February 21 from approximately 8:00 - 10:00 a.m.  If this warming trend continues, it looks like Tom Ketelaar will be looking at ways of promoting hill sliding on grass.

In Fun and Fellowship, the Kartel won the preliminary prize, as well as the opportunity to go for the grand prize.  However, Queen Daphne was selected to compete on behalf of the Kartel and she managed to come out just a bit short.

The Feature Attraction

The program was given by Jen and Jonah Zahm.  After introductions of Jen and Jonah, the highlight of the program was introduced, Lila, the golden retriever service dog.  The service dogs are trained to be able to provide a mom like Jen some time away.  Jen explained that if one were to find a golden retriever in a public place with a leash on, there's probably a pretty good chance that the dog is a service dog.  The dog is trained not to play but to watch the patient.  Directly, with regard to epilepsy, these service dogs are also trained to be able to anticipate when a seizure might be imminent.  The types of dogs ordinarily used for training purposes are golden retrievers, labs, and poodle mixes.
