Upcoming Events/Fundraisers/Dates
2nd Annual Kiwanis-Pepsi Bags Tournament, Saturday, September 18th, Noon - 6 pm, Schwiebert Riverfront Park
The Opening Act
Club President, Adam Bain, called the August 30 meeting to order.  Jonathan Turner was unavailable, so remembering how great the membership sounds in singing a capella, Adam dispensed with song leading.
Adam's first announcement was a reminder of the September 18 bags tournament.  We're still looking for teams.
Liz Loveless again reminded us of the October 2 NAMI walk on Credit Island.
Dale Grabau gave us an update on the annual City of Rock Island Labor Day parade.  Our Club will again be participating in the parade, which is scheduled to step off at 9:20 on Monday, September 6.  If you're interested in walking, you should make plans to be at the 18th Avenue branch of American Bank & Trust between 8:30 and 9:00.
We were also given a reminder that we will not meet next Monday, September 6.  Rather, we will have a joint meeting with Rotary on Tuesday, September 7.  Featured speaker will be Dr. Mike Oberhaus, the new Superintendent of Schools for Rock Island/Milan School District No. 41.
The membership was treated to a special occasion by the presentation of the prestigious Kiwanis Hixson Awards to Steve Andich and Tom Plechaty.  It would be difficult to think of individuals who would be more deserving of this award, and we all join in congratulating Steve and Tom.
Guests included members of the Alleman High School Key Club.
In Fun and Fellowship, Gene Smith won the preliminary prize, which he graciously turned back to the Club treasury.  The Kartel qualified for the grand prize and, in a moment of shock and awe, Lee Schenck won the prize.
The Feature Attraction
The program was given by Mr. Kevin Ferris, publisher of Mature Focus magazine.  Kevin gave a brief background on the organization, which was started by his parents in 1992.  In 1999, Kevin's father expressed some interest in retiring, and by April, 2000, Kevin assumed responsibilities for the publication.  Kevin gave some detail on what all of his duties are at Mature Focus, which go well beyond being publisher and editorial writer.  Kevin spoke on how he finds sources for the contents of his articles and related some of his experience in putting out the publications.
