Upcoming Events/Fundraisers/Dates
Remember, there is NO meeting at the BotanicalCenter on Monday.  Our normal meeting will be held at the Arsenal Country Club at 11:30.  There's no extra charge as your dues cover the luncheon. If you plan on eating lunch and have not yet RSVPd please contact Lee Schenck by tomorrow morning.  Her email is lschenck@ambankqc.com, or call 732-5070.  You may also still register to golf.
The Opening Act
President Adam Bain presided over the Club meeting of August 2.  Jonathan Turner provided the pre-meeting entertainment but, to the disappointment of all, Adam dispensed with group singing for the day.
As a reminder, the Club will not be meeting at the Botanical Center next Monday.  Rather, we will be dining at the Arsenal Golf Club at 11:30 on August 9. Lunch will be followed by those who wish to play the beautiful Rock Island Arsenal golf course.  IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO USE THE ROCK ISLAND ENTRANCE, since the Moline entrance is closed and the Davenport entrance apparently will not be available.
The Kiwanis District Convention will be held this weekend in Bloomington, Illinois.  If you'd like to drop down to see what's new in McLean County, give Adam a call.
Adam reminded us that the bags tournament would be held September 18 at Schwiebert Riverfront Park, starting at noon.  There is an early enrollment discount, so if you've ever wanted to engage in this and have a really good time, you're encouraged to do so.
Kathy Wine gave an announcement on behalf of River Action.  The annual conference will be held August 25 - 27.  Can you canoe?  Floatzilla is waiting.
Payton, the young boy who learned to ride his bicycle at our first Learn to Ride session, was represented by his mother, who described the event and thanked all who participated and made the event possible.
In Fun and Fellowship, the Kartel won the preliminary prize, only spending $8 this week to win $5.  Mike Swartz won the opportunity to go for the grand prize, which he ended up winning.
All of the membership was delighted in a new member induction for Jennifer Bloom, who was introduced to the Club by John Califf.
The Feature Attraction
The program was given by Lester White, foreman of the National Cemetery at the Rock Island Arsenal.  Les stated that he has worked there for 32 years.  Some of the interesting statistical information he passed on was the fact that as of 2008, there were 2.9 million grave sites situated in 130 national cemeteries nationwide.  Approximately only 50 percent of total acreage available is currently in use.  The national cemeteries are operated by the Veterans Administration.  The largest national cemetery is on Long Island and is 1,045 acres in size.  The smallest is 0.03 acres located in Hampton, Virginia.  The national cemetery system was begun in 1862 and the Rock Island Arsenal was one of the earliest cemeteries established, that being in 1863.  In 1868, the cemetery was moved at the request of then Arsenal Commander, Rodman, from its location close to what is now Memorial Park to its current location.  The Rock Island Arsenal National Cemetery consists of approximately 73 acres, of which 13 are fully undeveloped.
