The Opening Act
|
In
the absence of Club President, Adam Bain, First Vice President Craig Knobloch ably conducted the meeting. Our entertainment impresario, Jonathan
Turner, was also missing but Liz Loveless gamely led group singing. Tom
Ketelaar stood in for Tom Plechaty concerning the available slots for the
weekend softball tournament. Please
remember that if you run into a conflict, you should find your own substitute
for working. Craig
gave us another and final reminder of the Club's first annual Learn to Ride
program Sunday, July 25 from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Botanical Center. Gene
Smith announced that the District golf outing would be held August 9 at the
Rock Island Arsenal. The regular Club
meeting will also be held there from approximately 11:30 until 1:00. Following the short meeting, the golf outing
will begin. The
membership was informed that on August 19, area Kiwanis Clubs would be
sponsoring the annual megaclub meeting at The Lodge in Bettendorf. More details will follow. Liz
Loveless announced that on August 7, there will be a kickoff luncheon for the
NAMI walk to be held at Credit Island. Guests
included a visiting Kiwanian from Lancaster, Ohio and the always-welcome and
enthusiastic Moline Kiwanian, Mel Peterson. In
Fun and Fellowship, Dale Blocklinger won a Dining Tour book. Gary Johnson won the preliminary monetary
prize, and Jud Briggs was welcomed back to the fellowship with another effort
at losing the grand prize.

| The Feature Attraction |
The
program was given by our own Club member, Bob Votroubek. Bob began his presentation with some
background on the True Value organization which first emerged in 1948. The organization has grown to approximately
5,000 outlets in 54 countries, with the company owning its own paint factory
and managing 12 district centers. True
Value is a dealer-owned organization. As
for himself, Bob started at age 16. In
1984, he launched the 30th Street site, which has been remodeled
five times since then. In 1993, he added
U-Haul services and in 2000, he added a rental operation. Bob has 25 employees and sells over 41,000
items.
